I heard that if you advance the timing it will help the bottom end power and that retarding it will help the upper rpm power. So would there be any gains by advancing the timing since the 3.3 is such a dog off the line?

Yes , you will gain power by advancing timing . But if you go to far your engine will ping and you'll lose power and potentially damage the engine . This is one instance higher octane fuel would be beneficial :D

yes you can. you think you can run the same timing in new orleans and denver? no. to change it tho it is a bit more complicated than just loosning the dist. bolt and turning the dist. takes a lap top and a few other expen$ive goodies.

Advancing the timing can also make the engine run hotter

It can be worth it for a daily driving too. If you happen to get a tank of bad gas, you can retard the timing and quit the early detonation in the motor. Its more directed toward racing. Since if you are boosted you need to retard teh timing some to make up for the more heat you are making and etc... Same holds true for Nitrous, too much advance timing and nitrous is horrible for the motor and if you run a stock PCM it won't automatically tell that you hit the N2O switch and got 50+ horse than its normally running.

Check out here for more info on the adjustable timing. 3400 guys only though, sorry. Others might be able to get some useful tips from it though.
