My wife calls me on her way home from work telling me she lost powersteering but was only 2 miles away from home.

When she got home I checked it out and the belt looked half off the pulley. As I started it only a few seconds into it running and the god damn shitty plastic pully ripped off.

WTF.

To be honest with you, this is becoming by far the shittiest vehicle I have ever owned. Even worst than my $175 Cavilier and a bigger money pit than my Grand National.

http://www.gaownersclub.com/forum/attachment.php?s=&postid=312230

And to be honest with you I really don't think we are going to fix it or have it fixed by the meet. I really dont feel like wasting any more money on it, plus I still need tires for the trailer and crap.

I think the wife and I are going to go look at a few vehicles, maybe get a Mazda 6 or something.

Ouch John, that sucks hardcore. :( Leanne, I'm sorry to see your baby in such a state of distress. Maybe we could all take up a collection for it in Albany this weekend.

If you need any help with the repair, I do anything I can for yas.

hey those mazda 6's are SWEET..i love the look of them..don't know how reliable they are, but they can't be anywhere close to un-reliable as GM..good luck with all of that..BTW, what kind of car does your wife have?

My friends parents bought him a fully loaded silver Mazda 6. He let me drive it, they are BEAUTIFUL cars! I really recommend it! Even though it's Japanese...

The car won't be at the meet this year though. (I highly doubt it anyhow...) she's been a bad, bad girl!!

It is only me, or it seems that many Grand Am on the GAOC are having problems recently?
My car was acting wierd..
Jay's car died...
Now your car doing that...
Good luck with whatever you decide to do John and Leanne!!

Ya know, we considered it, although I do have one problem.. I need the room the GA gave me... we have Theresa who grew up in camaros... I can't bear to put her through another 2 door vehicle. And I won't buy a 4 door cavy :(

I feel so betrayed by my car. How sad is that? The worst part of this whole ordeal was that I was getting off an exit ramp at about 40 when I felt the wheel tighten up and a stink come through my vents. At that point I was literally 2 minutes from home so I drove it... tried to turn it into the driveway and couldnt, John backed it in, popped the hood and pieces of the belt were flying everywhere.

I love my GA but when she puts me in tears from fear, I wanna trade it soo bad. UGH, I hate huge financial decisions like this one..

That's how I felt about my last car (Nissan Altima), but I broke down and bought my first brand new car, my GT1

Yeah but after riding in that Mazda3 I'm sold.

Now if my damn money tree would just grow or if I could find someone to pay what we owe on our GA we'll be all set.

Dang Leanne, sorry to hear about that. I know how you feel spending a lot of time and taking good care of her and this is how she repays you...sucks. Our friends just bought the Mazda3 hatchback and just love it. Oh, and you can get it with the xenon lights too! Good luck...hang in there!

I'm sorry to hear that Leanne.
So far, nothing wrong with my car, except I went 2 times at the dealer for shaking brakes and the paint chiping pretty bad on the lower doors. The car only has 28400 km right now.
I traded my 96 Grand Prix for the Grand Am because I was tired of brake problems (we had to redo them at each wheels at least once a year), and now it seems like the Grand Am much better.
Hopefully, when the warranty will end, I'll return the car to the dealer. One advantage of my leasing.

Well it's back on the road. Had AAA tow it to Rjs shop a few miles away and he took care of it today while I was at work. $40 later and a new pulley and belt and all looks good so far.

Can't figure out why it would break like that, the shaft still spins freely and all. Who the heck knows.

WHOA ... strange John ... I can't make excuses for the car, no one can, but you think maybe this could just simply be one of those 'freak' things that happen that just happen to occur to the GA you aren't 'happy' with?! ... like I said, not trying to make excuses but occasionally issues just happen to all cars no matter what they are but there does seem to be an over abundance of 'issues' lately :( ... glad you got it fix guys!

Well RJ also said that the belt was cracked and "old" & thats why it slipped off the pulley.

Among many of the things we repalced or fixed on my '93 DeVille to get rid of some roughness and noises... when we pulled the serp. belt, the P/S pully was wobbling....you could grab it and the bears inside were shot that the whole shaft would move....

.... so it was about $80 for the new pump, and we put that in... we also had to replace the bearings on the alternator (ended up getting it rebuilt for really cheap) and the main noise was coming from the AC compressor.... it was missing bolts, the clutch plates were chewed up, the bearings were shot etc.... all fixed now though.... but now I have *other* noises.... ahhh...oh well....

....right now I don't know if I will be taking the '79 or the '93 to the meet... more on this later..

maybe the fact that the belt was riding half on the pull put the stress on it different causing it to break?

Yes, I drove it last night and to work this morning and so far so good, although I was ready for it to go out around the turns, I have a feeling that fear will go away... soon I hope, I hate clenching my hands on the wheel as if I was holding on for dear life.
