I have a 2001GASE1 with rear drum brakes. I took the rear wheels off the other day and noticed that on two of the studs there are these little brass friction rings. They look like a washer but don't seem to serve any purpose. My concern is that I will have to remove them to replace the rear drum brakes and it looks like that these are a one time use only deal. Once they are removed they would have to be replaced. Does any one know what these are and if I need them on there. I suspect they are put on the there from the factory to keep the drums tight to the hub during the assembly process. Any ideas or information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I believe that's all they do . I wouldn't worry about replacing them . Once the wheels are tightened up that keeps the drums on .

Exactly ... simply remove them and forget they ever existed :)
