Hey guys, seeing how most of you swear by CAI's I wanted to run an idea by you all and see what you think. I really like the concept of having a CAI in my Grand Am to improve its performance. However, I don't like the idea of having it in the fenderwell where I can possibly hit a puddle, thus hydrolocking the engine. I have a friend that had this happen to him and it cost $9k to repair!
This is my custom idea: remove the ram air set up that came with the car and route a CAI to be fed via the front grill, much like the stock Ram Air is fed. I would use one of the materials linked below as the intake tube and cap it off with a K&N-type filter.

I don't know too much about doing this type of stuff, but would my concept work? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You'll be about the 100th person to try this. It doesn't work. There are probably tons of threads about guys trying different things (me included) and nothing is any better than just putting in a CAI. The only thing I can think of that would be better is some kind of hood such as the Warhawk that has the ram openings, but then you'd still have water problems.

If you're really worried about water you can get a bypass valve.

you could make a splash gaurd or something to protect it in the fenderwall

The only way that you could get hydrolock is to submerge your front end until the water was over your TB. You go through water puddles that deep? There is no one that i have ever heard about or seen on this or any GA forum that has ever had hydrolock or any problems with water and there CAI. Except one but that guy was lying and being a troll. I have had mine for a year and a half now. It has been through rain, deep puddles, winter, slush and just about any weather conditions you could think of. The filter stays cleaner than my stock ram air did.

^ hit it right on the head

hydrolock from a CAI = a dumb ass driver

lemme go drive through my pool's deep end to test it

just get a hood like Old_Guy was talking about and rig in a lil flap of sorts to block it off when its raining. and use a WAI that can still breath with the hood closed up.
