I never really thought about it too much at the time but now when i think about my jeep i think there mush have been some problem with it. First of all it has the 151ci 4 cyl engine. I would get about 13 miles per gallon gas and it was slow as hell. It had a tach on it and i hardly ever got the RPM above 3,200 because i thought it would shake to pieces. Now it is 22 years old, but is that normal? i remember after putting a new carb on it then started it up with out the air filter on and it belched out some huge flames. So maybe the timing is off? I just wanted to know what anyone thought about this?
I think the problem with the Jeep is that it isn't a Grand Am. Grand Ams don't have those problems. Please get a Grand Am and technical questions can be answered.

sound like the timing is off/maybe carb not adjusted correctly could be either one but what the timing for a jeep is i wouldnt know ... sound like it is out of adjustment 5 to 10 degrees with flames and all .... or if the carb was new (out of the box) needs adjustment to idle/air/ fuel screws if the fuel is adjusted to rich could cause flames too... but timing is usually the culprit if its not the carb... try loosening the bolt for the distributer just a little bit so you can just turn it either way but it is still kind of snug/hard to turn after you have marked its position/ present alignment(one mark on the distributer shaft close to the block and one mark directly below it on the block) with white out paint marker or a crayon .... see if you get a better idle by turning it(with the engine running) very slowly a few degrees clockwise or counterclockwise ..... see what happens(if it starts to run rough or dies/wont start re-allign the marks and turn it the other direction) see which way turning it makes it run better.....by the way this all if you dont have a timing light if you got a timing light get a haynes manual and follow the illustrations/instructions to adjust the timing ....... the carb is easy too just find the adjusting screws usually the ones(could be one or two screws next to each other... if two screws they need to be adjusted together each gets the same adjustment ) closest to the intake and turn it/them all the way into the carb then back it/them out in 1/4 turn intervals while trying to start the vehicle until you get it started then turn it/them about another 1/4 turn so you will not have a lean mixture but not a rich mixture either. that should do it ...... hope this helps

Possible maybe i will play around with it when i go home for break. Oh i just remembered one thing that might be important. Sometimes after i turned her off the engine would be almost all done spinning then all of the sudden rev back up to normal idle and then shut off. LOL I always told my friends she had spirit. Hmm any ideas about the problem? could timing cause that or is that a completely different problem on its own? lol yeah my jeep is a character.
