I think I'm going to try and change my own oil for once. What size socket do I need for the drain plug? Does it require metric because my standard tools don't seem to fit. I have a 2001 Grand Am GT 3.4 V6. Thanks.

On my 3.1 (and TwinCams...), it requires a 15mm socket, Metric :D

3400 is the same size, 15mm.

15 mm for sure. Don't forget to change your oil filter as well.

when using any socket to remove the drain plug, use a 6pt if you have it in the correct size. Nothing is worse than trying to remove a drain plug that some bozo overtightened and stripping it from using a 12pt socket.

Better yet, use an impact socket on a hand wrench. Impact sockets apply the torque to the flat section, not the points, of a bolt/nut.

Excellent point made by MagusXIII.

Good point Don.
Actually I don't even think I own any 12 point sockets, and I use my impact sockets all teh time, unless I need a socket with a thinner wall to fit in a tight area.
Only tool in my box that are 12 point are my combination wrenchs. :)
