I was curius, I just got a 2000 grand am se and was wondering what can be pulled out of these 2.4l motors. I was also looking for some opinions. I was thinking of starting with a CAI then a header and exhaust. after that new throttle body and intake. Just looking for a little knowledge and some opinions.

You can do a hybrid w/ previous models of the quad motor.. just like Honda b-series motors are swapped left and right like rednecked siblings.. only place to actually do it however is mantapart...
you can remove the balance shafts for more fun...
I think you can probably also swap the entire wiring harness from OBD-II to OBD-I if you know what you're, but nobody i know tried to do it and see what the complications are. Would be nice not having to worry about the sensor on the intake cam... ya know?
there's a cam swap which gives you nice top end w/o really actually sacrificing anything downlow.
the 00+ motors have a tuner lip on the intake manifold that can be dremeled off. You can also port the intake manifold to almost 62mm w/o breaking the gasket.
pre99 2.4's had low impedance injectors while post99 2.4's have high impedance injectors.. which means injectors meant for earlier 2.4's are not compatible w/ newer models and vice versa unless you do some wiring harness swapping.
cavalier owners have been converting to the 2.3HO log style intake.. there seems to be a problem w/ the EGR valve when doing this swap, but they overcame it by swapping out the computer to a newer 99+ modeled comp. which didn't have programming for the egr valve, but did have a different knock sensor which would have to be changed as well.. but you don't have to worry about egr if you're 99+ modeled grand am
99 2.4 models were probably the most powerful version due to not having certain stupid detuning things in the intake manifold and such...
there's no fuel rail out there w/ a provision for a fuel pressure guage made for the 2.4L
you can buy a supercharger from the dealership that's a complete bolt on job....
turbocharging is fun and costly...
all motor hasn't found it's limits yet.. nobody has the cash to do it..
um that's all i can think of. for usefulness of this motor.

How?!? Looks to me like its part of the oil pump! Explain, or I will throw down the gauntlet and we will commence in battle, knave! :D ( j k )

well I'm not to sure of the process but it has to do with buying some kind of kit where you still keep the oil pump gears. I know that there are a few J-bods running around with out it you could check there to see if you can find the process. I know that there not that much info on how to do it. But check the j-forum.

Yes the balancing shafts can be taken out. Go do a search over a j-body.org :)
