I heard this rumor that instead of using Dynomat to line your trunk, there was some sort of roofing material that you could use in the same way, only a hell of alot cheaper. Does anyone know anything about this? Maybe a brand name, or what it even is?

ok, well ive had some experience with other "household" materials, and by far, dynamat is still better. I use the extreme stuff and I will stick with it. Ive used many other products including pipe insulation and while it does work to some degree, it still is better to just get the dynamat. If you really want, besides that, id suggest gluing carpet down , but it has to stick to the metal in all places or its doenst work very well. There are also other types of sound deadener, like brownbread that you might want to try out.

Hey. I came across some great info on Dynamat alternatives. I'm using a roofing product called Peel N Seal. You should be able to get this at any Lowes or Home Depot. I know Lowe's sells a 6"x25' roll for $12-$13 dollars. That's around a $1/sq ft. I haven't tried any of the other sound deadening materials myself so I can't really speak for the other products efficiency. I do know that this stuff works GREAT! Here are some links that go into greater details on this subject. Hope this helps.

P.S. Not trying to advertise any other site. Just trying to pass on some information.

There are many alternatives to Dynamat.
There is also a generic Dynamat you can get for a lot cheaper.
I don't have time to do the research, but you can find a lot of answers here http://audioforum.termpro.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi
One of the best audio forums around.
I've gone as far as to use roofing shingles to mass load my sheet metal. Worked like a charm.
