I know this isn't exactly the right forum, but it was the best I could find, since it deals with security. Anyway...

Can anyone recommend a good but economical remote start and entry system? Also, how hard is installation? I have a 1997 GAGT with 3.1L V6. Thanks.

no need to worry..your in the correct forum! :D

Well, as far as install, your 97 has GM's Passlock 1 security so in order to do a remote starter, you will need to interface with that. I know DEI has a bypass module (555L) that will be needed when dealing with Passlock 1 or 2. The overall install on a 97 GA isn't too bad, but your underdash dosen't come off like someother vehicles do so you may have to be in some messed possitions under the cramped dash. If your not familliar with remote start or alarm installs, I'd suggest you let a professional installer take care of this....especially with the Passlock system coming into play.

DEI also has a few remote start/Keyless systems out there as well. The Rattler 369D is a pretty good one that I am very familliar with. I've installed easily about 100 of these with in the past year, and I found them to be very easy.

I'm now dealing with Code Alarm systems, and they seem to be great as well. Although very similar, I still rather the DEI, but thats only because I was more use to them. I only have ruffly 5 or 6 Code systems under my belt so far so it'll take some time.

Just please stay away from Bulldog.....lol

I found one of those rattlers you mentioned for $40 bucks. I really would prefer to install it myself, and it said it includes install video and whatnot. Is it feasible to think I could install it, or is it really that hard?

If your not experienced, I wouldn't attempt it at all.

If I buy it myself, how much should I expect for installation?

We charge about $100 for install on most alarm or remote start systems.

About this time last year I got a similar idea in my head. I started installing by myself on my days off and it took me damn near two weeks! If it wasn't for people's help here (nineteen88ga for one!) I never would have got it done. www.the12volt.com was also a big help.

I would have paid 200 bucks in a heartbeat to have it professionally isntalled. If I ever get a different car and get one installed, you can bet I won't be doing it myself.

That being said, when you do get it done it's well worth it. I haven't stepped into a freezing / burning up car since. :)
