I was just wondering? Do you have a factory air box or an aftermarket intake?

dragonwing, I'm a little confused on why you bother replacing the bolt with the one rsm sent? whats the differece?

I don't know the difference. It was written in their instructions to do so. However, I imagine the shear forces on the factory bolt may be higher than it can handle so RSM has supplied one that can handle it. This is mere speculation though. Better safe than sorry. I thought the same thing initially, "Why bother?" but then I thought, if RSM took the time to supply a replacement bolt and indicated in their instructions to replace it, there must be a good reason. It only adds about 20 min of extra install time (feeling for the bolts and what not).

I have a factory airbox with a K&N filter installed. I noticed a real difference in throttle response when I switched to the K&N and the sound got a tad throatier. The main reason I haven't upgraded to a CAI is the one I would buy (Dr. Speed CAI) is 189 bucks. [I wouldn't have made the STB purchase if the group buy was any less than a 20% discount, thanks again Babalouie!]

Yeah, I would just make your own, save yourself $130. All you would need would be an intake with a straight piece with a 90? on the end and another short straight piece. It would be basically the same to make one for the 3400 as it is for the 3100 since they are mostly the same. I made mine for $50 US, $150+ is just way too much. And mine performs/looks just like everyone else who paid $150+ :D.
The main reason I asked you about the stock airbox is that I heard a rumour that the STB may not fit with a factory intake. Just wondering. Thanks for clearing that up for me. :)

I also didn't replace the factory bolt with the RSM bolt. I hope it doesn't cause any trouble down the road. I thought maybe the RSM bolt was there for older cars where the factory bolt might not have been long enough.

Thats what i was thinking as well, maybe the factory bolt can't handle the extra force.. i figure.. it it can't, it'll break/bend, and then i'll put the rsm one in.
and dragonwing, where the hell did you get instructions? I didn't receive any, and couldn't find it on their site. :)

I agree. I too questioned the extra bolt, but replaced them anyways. It really wasn't that hard to do. No cuts on my hands, just some red marks. lol Ok, and I lost one nut down between the seat and the rear sheet metal.

I'm very much into "prevention". Keep in mind, if that one bolt breaks, the other one is going to break too. Then you have to replace both, and that other one seems much more difficult to get to. AND, you have no idea where you'll be when they both break. Imagine you've won a dream date with your favorite supermodel, and you're on your way to the airport to catch a flight there.... and then, SNAP! SNAP! ... and you're left cursing and supermodelless, and it was all your fault :D.
As far as instructions, there was an envelope with my invoice in it. The envelope also contained a single page with some instructions on it for the rear bar. It didn't look like an instruction page at all, and you could have mistaked it for just some hand out. And in all honesty the instructions were very basic [ 1) Lift rear of car. 2) Remove bolt farthest to the rear, replace with one supplied 3) Attached mounting plates loosely, you'll need to adjuest 4) straight edge of plate should face rear of car. 5) Tighten all bolts for proper installation] That was almost literally what the instructions were.
LOL Shawn lost a nut ... I too just ended up with red and black hands, no cuts. I however still had my nuts.

If I ever do that mod, I'll want to run the filter down into the tire well to actually have a CAI instead of a WAI, and that's beyond my ability to do well enough for my liking. Thanks for the FYI though!
Also, the STB isn't even really close to the airbox at all on the 2003 3400 engine. Wonder how that rumor got started. The front bar is a piece of cake to put on. The only thing I see as being a problem is if you had an aftermarket alternator. The bar goes over the stock alternator really close.

Has nothing to do with it boy. It's the fact that dip Craig said he was going to have a college student finish them on monday. Which in other words mean they are not any priority to them. They get them done with they get them done, and they dont give a SH%T about when. They still made money of those freaking bars, and they are all saying "you got a great discount". Yeah, thats great and all, but why the hell does that mean we have to wait forever to get them. It's like they just dont care about it or something.
I think its just total BS. And just like i said in the other thread, my lawyer is calling them tommorow. I'll never deal with this half @$$ company again.

Yeah, I totally understand man. I don't know why it's taken this long...It is getting to be a bit too much. I know they were at SEMA all last week so no one was at the shop, but they should have been done by now. Hopefully everyone will get their bars this week.

Now that most of us have our STB's, and winter is around the corner. Are these STB's going to help us in the snow or are they going to cause our cars to slide all over the place? Just a thought.
nice96gt
11-04-2004, 04:13 PM
The strut bars won't make your car worse in the snow, but they will train you into knowing you can take corners easier and at higher speeds than before. As long as you realize there is snow and ice on the ground and that the bars won't help your car STICK to the ground any more than it did before, you will be fine. The bars don't make you invincible, they just improve handling on dry road, unfortunately they won't do a damn thing in the snow. :D

Hey everyone, I just wanted to take this time to thank all of you guys who participated in this group buy. I did the best that I could to help get you guys the price and quality. Sure I've made some mistakes and learned from them, but if it wasn't for the help of you guys, I would have not realized any of my mistakes and I am able to create a better system for future group buys. I aplologize for any of the inconviences (I know what they are) and I can assure that future buys will go a lot more smoothly as I have new rules and regualtions for future buys. Thanks again,. and I hope everyone enjoys their bars. Feel free to pm me if there are any concernes, or questions and even suggestions that you may have.
Cheers!!
