Well I guess its time to repost this :)

The Ecotec 2.2L first came to the US in the 1999 as a base engine for the new Saturn L-Series. The engine was however first designed in Europe under Opel(where it was actually a 2.0L). The new engine is the first global 4 cyl engine under GM. Which was the potential to reach 1,000hp as is done in such cars as the sunfire dragster. Oh yeah and as far as mpg GM its suppose to get 24/32 with the auto and 25/33 with the manual. But there are a limited amount of manuals made each year. The engine is available in many vehicles currently the Grand Am SE, Alero, Saturn L200 and LW200, Saturn ION, Saturn VUE, Chevy Cavalier and Pontiac Sunfire.

They have this engine in the new zx2 right and are these good engines? My grandfather has a 2002 zx2 and it runs good but as far as modding this car for performance is it good after modding or just a waste of money?

The ecotec will be. Gm designed the engine to be boosted. The sunfire drag car uses the ecotec and creates 1000hp. Of course the normal person cant do that but you can boost the ecotec engine to 250 hp using all stock parts. There is a chart here that shows you what reinforcments are needed above that http://www.year2032.com/ecotec.htm Right now a lot of the parts are still in development but by the end of this year there will be a ton of stuff available

This engine is pretty sweet compared to the other 4 bangers. I can tell GM did their home work instead of just throw stuff in there and hoping it would work till the warranty ran out. I will definatley mod it up as they release parts. Only thing that made me mad was they didn't have any 5 spd Grand Ams at the dealer and then charged me $800.00 for an auto trans upgrade that I didn't want in the first place

I understand how you felt. I wanted a 5 speed. I bought my car last June and from then to now they have still never had a manual Grand Am in any of the lots in Indianapolis. I go and look almost every week.

I've seen several 5-speeds around here on new dealer lots. I'm dying to test drive one. I'm sure soemthing else will need warranty work on my car soon enough, so I will try it out then. They should know better than to take long to fix my car....I always wait on them and get bored and test drive other stuff. They think it will get me to buy a new car, but NOT!! Its just fun to run the crap out of a new car. A few weeks ago when I was there they had a new Silverado SS. Those are nice and will haul a little ass!! lol!!

So far as I can tell so far from reading posts this is a hot 4 banger. I'm dyin' to get rid of my 99. If anyone wants!!! it's a 3.4l Champagne gold 4 door se. I need to get a car that can get modded and also one that's not going to need repairs every 3 months!!! I love my grand am's to death but the repairs will kill me soon!!!! How much spunk does the ecotec have to it??

well stock it is what it is. But upgraded it can easily exceed what the 3400 V6 can do it just depends on the money invested and the public development of parts

I love this motor, its beats the 4 banger in my sisters 2001 Alero flat out off the line. I my car is bran new, i put 235 miles on one tank of gas, 12 gallons btw. I really like this motor. I really need cold air intake though.....

I have seen this motor apart before. Its kinda funny because it is very similar to the Cadillac Northstar just cut in half. From what I under stand it gets about 160 horse? if thats true it gets the same horsepower as my 3300 v6, GM has come a long way.

No that is not true, however in different applications it does get different hp most gm vehicles that use it have 140 hp however the saturn vue has 153 using the same engine. And there are some supercharged variations coming out soon (first to debut in the saturn Red Line Series which will have 200+ hp)

lol im an im a idiot, i had the chance to get the MT but dident because im not so good with stick. now that i know how much this thing (eco) could be modded and how seemingly rare the MT are i feel like a jackass. i should bought it and learned... but mine came with a better package.. i got the aluminum wheels and some other junk that im not too sure of.. the only options that i wish my car had that that one did was the wing and (now) tranny

i ronically all the GA at the dealership were white....?

Ive noticed that about some dealerships they have all the same colors and tey are usually a plain color.

As far as the manual/auto trans through there is one thing positive about having the auto and thats the fact that your resale value (which is already extremly low is a lot higher with the auto. But even knowing that I understand how you feel)
