The CD player of my stock system quits working after 10-15 minutes. I can get a decent Sony MP3 player from my hubby cuz he just upgraded to an Alpine head unit. I'm not an audiophile, so the stock sound quality is fine for me - I actually like the factory "subwoofer" - and want to make sure I can swap out the factory deck with the Sony, no problems with the "subwoofer" working? The Sony has 52w x 4 max output, and my concern is that this output would go to a 25w x 2 amp for the bass of the 6x9s? Wouldn't this cause any problems?
In a nutshell, can I replace the factory head units without negatively affecting sound quality (or possible improve it a tad with more output to the door speakers and not losing the factory "subwoofer")?

yes, you SHOULDN'T have a problem with just replacing the stock headunit. actually the "subwoofer" is just your 6x9 woofers with a low pass signal on them. sound will be about the same since, POSSIBLY, a little bit better with the sony. now if you start replacing speakers is when you'll lose your low end response in the system. and that 52x4 is exactly what you said.......max. that's the maximum output of that headunit during a brief musical burst. the RMS number is what you pay attention to. the RMS number for that HU is probably about 20x4.
as long as you connect all the wires right in your harnesses you should get virtually the same sound with the aftermarket sony as you do with the factory setup you have now :)

ok well first thing GA's dont have a factory subwoofer. If your car is like mine then u have DVC 6x9 DVC or Dual Vocie Coil have 2 inputs one for mids and highs and one for bass. But to answer your question Yes u can put the sony in with out losing any sound quality. it should make it alot better. I have a JVC now and love it. my old cd player was a sony i did not like it at all. When u turned it up loud it made the speakers pop. the sony doesn't have a custom equalizer like my JVC i can turn it as loud as i want and the speakers never pop.
