i am also looking for info on the calais with the LO quad what are the years they came in, and also the achivea, what did the SC trim come with? and trim are the grand ams for the engines listed.

The Calais is the same as the Grand Am, so both the LO and HO Quads were available in that car from '88-'91 (oops, HO wasn't available at all in '88). I don't know exactly, but I believe you could get either the LO (150 hp) Quad or HO in the Calais S. And it's possible you could've gotten the LO in the base Calais. There was also the International Series Calais, in which you could get the LO or HO. The Cutlass Supreme also had an International Series...I believe you could get the Quad in that.

The OHC was available from '92-'94.

The Achieva model that had the W41 engine was called the SCX. The Achieva SC could have the HO or V6, and possibly even the LO.

For the '88-'91 GA, you could get the LE or SE, and either one could have either version of the Quad (except in '88 of course). The '95 Sunfire that had a Quad 4 was the GT model, I believe.

All in all, the list is pretty complete. There are a few extra little things that I can't remember offhand, but I'm sure others will pick up on them.

By 1996, the Quad 4 was replaced by the 2.4L Twincam. Are you sure yours is a '96? Or...are you sure it's a 2.3L Q4?

That's what I'm here for: to be bothered. :D J/k...seriously though, I just wanted to clarify because a lot of people call the 2.4L TwinCam a Quad 4, even though they aren't quite the same. The 2.4 is derived from the 2.3 though.

But GM still called the LD9 a quad 4, the Twin Cam name was a marketing effert to do away with the bad rep of the Q4's

I'm just going by what's on the engine cover. In '96, it said "2.4L TwinCam" on the cover. It is different enough from the Quad 4 that it can have a different name without just being a marketing ploy. But I agree...they probably could have called it the Quad 4 without too much trouble had that name not been given a bad reputation by then.

it's still a quad.. enough of hte parts are interchangeable along w/ the layout and design of hte motor... it's a quad w/ a significant update....

same with hondas K series motors. there's enough difference in some of them where you're like... it's really different, but there's still enough interchangeable parts where it's the basic k series motor..

i went and looked under the hood. it is what you said 2.4L twin cam. but i was always told it was a quad 4. the water pump is a pain to get to. it cost me 700 dollars. most of it was labor....

Brad97GS

That's one big difference between the old Quad and the TwinCam...the dang water pump!

Anyway, I still think there are enough differences to warrant the name change, and if you guys think otherwise, that's fine. But I think it just confuses people who don't know the extensive history of the Q4/TC when they start interchanging the names. So it seems best to me to stick to the names they were given.

How do I know if my engine is a L40, LGO or what? I just bought a 93 HO and don't know what its hp rating is.

an LGO is the HO and LD2 is the LO and the L40 is the SOHC motor.
