My friend said that if i wanted to up size my rims by 2 inches, that i would need bigger brakes, would I? If I do, which would you suggest and for a reasonable price?

I have seen it shown that it is a good idea. The reasoning is that the bigger rims and tires add rolling mass that takes more braking power to stop. Something like that, I may have the exact wording incorrect. The other thing with that is that your brakes may work fine, but will wear out quicker because they are working harder. Kind of makes sense anyway.

Personally, I'd do the upsize first and see if you notice a difference. Bigger brakes can always be added later.

Also, bigger brake discs just look better, more correct, when you have bigger wheels.

What do you have 15" wheels? Steelies? And you want to goto 17s? Probally Alloys? Don't worry about it. the only time you really need to worry about larger brakes is say going from a 15 or 16 to say a 20+.

If you installed larger brakes, you can't put your steelies back on for the winter and your spare tire won't fit.

Well if you could get some rims that weight about the same as your stock wheels then it would not make much of a differnce

what most say is correct, but I just want to emphasize the main truth. If your going 19's or 20's and above you will need to upgrade your brakes. Thats something many guys in suv's and trucks dont understand. Many times you see them with big 22's or so but with stock brake and you just shake your head because their braking distance is much increased.

Yeah, and now that it has been mentioned, it was during a car/truck/performance TV show where they went up to 20s that they discussed the brake upgrade to go along with wheel/tire upgrade. I remember now, as it was was a significant change.

First, thanks guys, I showed him this forum and he hasnt said anything since. I figured I should ask the people that actually own the cars.

Second is that I wont have the rims till around winter, which sucks, so imight ask some more questions then.
