They'll be appox. 7 - 7.2 inches tread width depending on brand ( 24.62 ) in diameter , so your speedo will be off a bit ( read higher than actual ) . But i think with your engine you'd be better off with the 205 . But if you want looks only a 225/45/17 would keep your speedo correct , but may be too wide .

OK, just to throw another thought into the mix for you. Why not go to a 225/50-16? Should fit no problem, although I have no idea of the effect on your speedo. Definitely will be wider and give you a good profile tire for the car, filling the fenders pretty good. Plus the setup will be cheaper than going to 17s or 18s.

Just so you know, I have that size on my 95 GT, using stock GT rim. So if your are giving any thought of going to a 205, now you know a 225 will fit, and will be wider too.

According to this, that tire wouldn't work:

I am going to go with the 215/45 17 yokohama avs es100 on my motegi mr7's, I said that because I knew some people thought I didn't know what I wanted. Unfortunately, this won't be able to get them until around December to February.

http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp That tire is closer to being correct than the 215 . I think you punched in the wrong data . Put the size of the tire on your car now ( 195/65/15 . And compare it to the two others . 225/50/16 and the 215/45/17 .

I didn't know the effect on his speedo as I had no idea of the size of his current tires. But I expected the 225s to work OK, as they replaced the original 205/55s I had no problem.

Not at all. They'l fit fine.
I have 215/45/17 on my lowered 95 (same suspension as 96-98)

Speedometer is not noticably off, it is such a minimal difference in circumference.
