Beats the heck out of me. Emission systems maybe?

Looks like a smog pump setup .

That is an air injection system that is commonly found on cars with California emissions. It is 100% factory stuff. Check your label under the hood, it probably says something like: "This vehicle complies with (year of car) California Emissions Standards."

It's refered to as A.I.R. which means air injection reaction.

Edit: It is sometimes found on cars without California emissions also. Cars with Federal emissions. So don't be shocked if your car is not California emissions.

Yes, like you said, a smog pump. LOL

A.I.R. is just GMs fancy terminology for a smog pump.

why do you have those in CA?

Well I don't live in Cali, but they have them because Cali is a highly polluted area. They are trying to lower the pollution levels by setting stricter emission laws and one way for many manufacturers to achive the stricter emission level laws is to add a smog pump.

Yep, smog pump. and a lot of blue loom.

thing is that it doesnt reduce emmisions. all it does is add fresh air to the exhaust. it still has the same amount of pollutants its just that it is diluted so when the sniffer is placed behind the tail pipe it doesnt read as high. its a stupid system that should never be used. hence why mine is GONE. plus frees up alot of room under the hood.

I think some other states require them too because there were a few cars in Albany who had them and I don't remember anyone driving from California :)

I thought from reading in several car magazines that there were various high altitude counties in western states that required cars there to meet the same emissions requirements as California cars. Hence the added smog pumps on some non-Cali cars.

They hurt power some as well dont they?

Smog pumps were all the rage at the end of the carbureted era, remebered by me and Colin and other old-timers. :D

They only absorb less than 1/2 hp of total power produced by the engine.
But if it weren't there, the engine would have to be DETUNED by about 5 hp to achieve the same level of low pollutants, so they actually ADD about 4.5 hp to a smog-efficient engine.

Because the O2 sensor is downstream of the point of injection, the PCM is mapped to provide ignition and injection signals assuming that the exhaust has already been injected with air.
Disconnecting the smog pump and therefore not injecting air will *prolly* cause the PCM to think the air/fuel mixture is excessively rich. It will *prolly* then adjust the spark timing/A-F mixture to run leaner. Lean = hot = burned exhaust valves.
One is really playing with fire by disconnecting a perfectly good, effective, dependable, and proven emissions system.

And, it's VERY illegal to disconnect any part of an emissions system, so it's prolly not wise for somebody to brag about such on an open forum.

Good luck.

Yeah i was wondering because when i purchased my Prelude i read somewhere that the California models came with 5 less horsepower than the normal Preludes and wasnt sure why?
