View Full Version : Which oil?
Whats up? Which synthetic oil would be good for my car? Castrol Syntec or Mobil 1. Right now I have been using castrol gtx, and want to go full synthetic.
Thanks

Exxon Superflo 5w-30. Put some in my car in the last oil change. I knew the dude at the quick oil change place so he let me use my own oil. Had no problem when it was in my car for 4,000 miles. Now Castrol 5w-30w in their. I need to buy some ramps so i can do it my self.

I have heard some good things about Amsoil. I would go with that.
I don't think there are any places in amarillo that seal Amsoil. Autozone, and advanced doesn't, and walmart. I might check around at a few other places.

Well, IIRC, you have to buy it off of a authorized dealer. the only one I know of, I have to call and have it shipped to me.

It's debateable that you'll get the full benefit of a full synthetic oil on your first oil change, usually by the 2nd or 3rd is when all the old oil is out of the galleries and off the engine parts. I've been a die hard mobil user since i've started working on cars so my opinion is a little biased lol

I feel ya. I used nothing but mobil one in my cars since I have been driving. I am actually thinking about switching to synthetic. Only got about 12K miles on mine.

If its the same as my 02 the oil filter is located on the upper drivers side right next to the intake manifold. It will be a large plastic nut shaped cap. I think its a 32 MM but u can get away with using a cressent wrench though u might chew up the plastic this way. After u get it lossened pull it up and let it sit for a few seconds to get all the oil to drip off it so u dont get to much splater all over ur shiney engine. Best way to avoid this iv found is to use the new filters box and grab onto the old filter threw the box and take it out of its purch. Install is the reverse.
Have fun

Wix is a good choice; if I remember I believe the Wix are reboxed AC Delcos; see which one is less expensive.
If youre a TRUE Ecotec fan, find Amsoil 5W40 (yes, 5w40!) synthetic, the same weight that is used in Europe. :brows:

Castrol Syntec 0W-30 that is Made in Germany :D
It is ACEA A3 rated.
& the only Castrol Syntec that is really synthetic; unlike the made in the US grades.
Only available at some larger AutoZones in the US.

What about using 0W-30 in cold temperatures that never get above 30F? I've never tried it.
Sometimes we get nights here that get down to -20F, and I know starts on mornings like that are hard on a motor even with 5W-30.

I've been using Royal Purple 5W-30 Full Synthetic for my last 3 or 4 oil changes. My engine runs very nicely and it feels like it revs easier. It was a huge improvement over non synthetic.

I've actually seen increased iron content in oil analysis using Mobil 1 5W-30. This is apparently quite common. Mobil 1's 5W-30 is not as good as the other Mobil 1 grades for some reason.
Anyway, I'm switching to Pennzoil Platinum at the next change. I'll post analysis results, but analysis after analysis by other drivers shows the PP 5W-30 is a significantly better performer than the M1 5W-30. I suggest the PP 5W-30. Couple bucks cheaper, too.

that was 2 1/2 years ago, still runnin the huge Q, still absolutely lovin it. I  actually took it to 4K miles betweens oil changes last month, and you wouldn't of been able to tell the difference, it was still clean.
Oh, and I will be hittin 100K miles with my next oil change as well.
