Anyone know what this could be? I was idling in the driveway, I'd just adjusted my headlights, and I stepped on the brakes a few times. After I let off the brakes, the engine was going from 500 rpm to 1,000 rpm and then back to 500 just as quick. It did it for about 2 minutes, then smoothed out to about 700 rpm. As soon as I hit the brakes again, it did it for another minute or so. Any ideas on this?

are you haveing any trouble codes? if not check all vaccum lines and specially check the vaccum line that runs to the map sensor sounds like the prob

No trouble codes. I'll check all that out though.

*Edit* The car has acted fine today, no repeat occurance. Odd enough.

it's probably just hunting. The governer keeps over correcting itself while trying to idle. mine does it a little once in a while but not as big of a range. my dads truck also does it. If it is hunting its not much to worry about especially if it doesnt happen too often.

I don't know what was involved with the headlight adjustment, but here's a thought that tags on Doobiess' vacuum line ides:

Under the battery is the vacuum accumulator bottle; black plastic cylinder, rounded ends, about the size of a 1 lb coffee can.

Extending engineward from the vac bottle is a nipple, that connects with 1/4 inch rubber tubing to some elbows and tees.
If you were messing in that area, you might have dislodged the fittings.

Good luck,
