Start with a compression test. See what that shows, while your at it check the plugs. Are still in good shape, is the gap still even close to spec's.

Still don't run right..................What do you mean.
runs ruff at idle after start?
idles fine, just craps out when you give it gas.

See what I'm getting to here.

could it be the coil housing?

Ok, before you do the compression test, as some one else said...it could be the coil cover.

Looking at the motor, you see the thing on top that say quad4 pull the 4 bolts that hold it down. Pull straight up, turn it over.
You will have a plastic cover looking back at you. Check it for cracks or dust lines with like trails through them.

If you see either, get a new housing. Call around they are 30 to 50 bucks. The coils live under the cover, but if you remove the bolts, the cover will just pull right up off the coils. Slide the new one over the coils and bolt it back down.

If I remember right a couple of the bolts are a different lenght. So be sure to out them all back in the Same spot as the came out of.

You can feel for a miss. With the motor running (carefully) put your hand in the exhaust stream coming out the exhaust pipe.
Every time a plug fires it creates a puff of wind you can feel coming out the exhaust pipe. You should feel a drummer in there that Never misses a beat. If the little creep misses a few beats. that is a miss, you will being to hear it as you feel it.

See what you get from there, if the cover and what not looks good, back to compression test.

Are you sure the timing chain was installed correctly? If it is just one tooth off, the car will not run right...

ok had the head reworked.i know have compression of 180 in all 4 cyl. it runs but misses at idle and smoothes out some at higher rpms but as it warms up it seems to run rougher. when you put it in gear it dies unless it is at a high rpm. timing is on the money and the ignition module checks good. ciol pack unknown as no way to check it. the plug boots are good. is there a censor to check for? and if possible what is the location for an electrical plug no. ped 2 and were does it plug into?

I am assuming you have new spark plugs in there...

Aside from that, I say the best thing to check for on a Quad is the coil housing and/or coils. Should be able to find some at the junkyard that are fairly cheap (though it's possible they are bad as well). Also, make sure the wiring from the ignition module to the coils is good. Those wires are in a hot spot, so they may get brittle with age.

It seems that 90% of the time when a quad4 isnt running right it is the coil cover. I've had 3 quad cars and they all started running like crap after a while and they all needed coil covers. What i dont get is how the dealership charged me $350 to replace it on the first car i had... At the time i didnt know how to work on these quad 4's so i just took itup there. Big mistake...

I still find it amazing that I had a Quad 4 for 4.5 years (say that out loud, heh) and never had a coil OR coil housing problem. Yet pretty much everyone else I know of has had that problem...

The housing had been replaced at least once before I owned it though - it was a white housing, while the originals were black.

My current quad 4 lasted 156k miles before the coils/housing went too crap. But that wasnt the case with my other cars.
