I have a '93 Grand Am GT with the H.O. Quad4.
With it comes the muncie/getrag 5-speed tranny.

I was wondering if anyone knows if my tranny will bolt right up to the 3400.

And even if it does, am I wise to change my tranny to a 2.8 or 3.1 5-speed tranny anyways because of the gearing?

Thanks in advance for your help.

it won't bolt up

the 2.3HO is a peppier motor anyway, why bother.

Dont get me wrong...I luv the characteristics of the HO Quad4.
It's a fun motor. It's the only reason I bought my '93 GAGT...plus the 5-speed.

But this is the third time this motor has gone to the crapper on me. Two rebuilds so far...and now a cylinder running on 50 psi.

I had my fun with the motor...it's time to change.

a 5spd 3400 would be so much peppier than a quad, stock for stock. a guy on the beretta boards is running mid 14's with a 5spd stock 3400, and hasn't even gotten his shifting down yet. show me a stock quad that does that! he's using the getrag 282 which does bolt right up - i don't think this is the same tranny as your quad has? different gearing, i know..

Which car is the getrag 282 out of??

The guy who will be helping with my swap (well, still haven't decided 100% if i'm doing it) will be getting the 2.8 or 3.1 tranny out of a j-body.

berettas, cavaliers, fieros, sunbirds.. there are different FDR's on different years & models. all of the 3x00 5spd swaps i know of are using transmissions from 2.8/3.1 berettas, but being as how i drive a beretta and frequent beretta boards, it's all i really know. i'm pretty sure the V6 tranny will have better gearing for the 3400 than the quad tranny you have now - you don't want to be shifting the 3400 at 7000rpm!

Will there be any issues with my driveshafts?

Are there any clearance issues with the subframe or sway bar or anything else?
