Hey guys,
I've been looking on the Pontiac site, and it says that Grand Am GT and GT1's came with the monsoon package.
Is this true? I have a 2000 Grand Am GT, and I don't know how to tell if I have monsoon system or not.
If they did, did they start making the monsoon system standard on the GT's in 2001 or something?

I'm pretty sure that all new GT's come with it... not sure about 2000's thought. If you have a monsoon, your head unit will look like this (http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/4/web/616000-616999/616875_60_full.jpg) .
Hope this helps.

I believe the monsoon started in 2000, so if you gots a GT yea you have it, or you could lay down in your trunk, you'll see the factory amps under the rear package tray

Well, if Im not mistaken, that CD head unit came out on the 2001 models.
I hve the older one, but I have a CD/Radio/Cassette player standard on my Grand Am, an there are speakers in the back window...I haven't checked the trunk yet, though..

monsoon came out in 2001 the amp powers all speakers
99-00 have a premium sound system system where the amp powers just the 6x9(s)
also in 2001+ grand ams the head unit is 2x din size

I wish I could have the new Monsoon head unit...I really want RDS (radio data system).

Me too, the new CD player looks awesome.
I have the premium system, and I've got a cassette player, but the funny thing is, they put it more towards the shifter than near the cd player.
Wonder why...

If you already have stock premium system or Monsoon, just go out and buy an aftermarket headunit. I bought a Sony MP3 HU for about $220 and it's still hooked up to stock speakers and amp. Sounds 10X better than stock unit.

I would, but I like how stock head units look in cars more than aftermarkets, especially on Pontiacs.
If I got a monsoon cd player headunit...what would that change? Just the looks, nothing else?

I agree about how I like the stock look...I've wanted a stock Monsoon MP3 player for my Grand Am for sometime...but I guess it won't fit in our '00's. The only way I'd get an aftermarket cd player is if it was GM fit (there's only a few like that) and if it had RDS (that's what I'm mainly after).

Well, if you were to get a monsoon HU you would also have to change your center console because, as was explained previously, the hole in your console is 1.5 din but the 2001+ radios are 2 din.
You would most likely need new wiring as well because the speakers aren't set up the same way.

If they didn't do that we'd still have AM-only radios with optional 8-track. That's called evolution :)

Buy it & buy the double din bezel. Relocate your h vac controls to mate up w/ the opening & you're all set to go. If I remember you'll have to move your h vac controls about an inch or less, no biggie.
As you can see I did some console rearranging myself & also made a bezel out of a '99 & an '01 so I could have a cassette pocket to mount my Neo Jukebox controls.
But yes, as Glimi said. You'll need new wiring & the amp & speakers to go with it. The Monsoon is a complete package & cannot be mix & matched with other components easily.
