Alright, i was oldschool when it comes to car stereo. Leave your stock speakers in while wasting all your money on an amp, then save up again and buy speakers that'll handle the amp. NOT ANYMORE!!
I replaced every speaker in my car, and even added some, but now it sounds like shyt comin from the back. the rear speaks are rated for 240 watts max, (a lil more than my JVC cd player puts out). So will amping these bad boys make em sound good? If so, should i amplyify my door speaks as well? How big of an amp would i need for just the 6X9's? and maybe for all four?

50 watts x 4 channel (RMS), minimum.
100 w x 4 (RMS) better....

Also i was wondering if it would be too terribly bad to get an amp that put out 10 more watts rms than my speakers call for on the spec sheet. I don't blash my music that terribly much, but i do want them to last. I know my old subs didn't mind for awhile, but then they puked on me. lemme know what you think

it won't hurt them, just keep the gains on the amp down

you dont need that much power btw.. sure your speaker can take it but it dont mean thats what YOU want.. maybe just what he wants.. see an average deck puts out approx 20 watts rms per channel.. and even if you had an amp at 20 x4 being the same power.. it would still sound better. 40x4 is pretty good... see in my car im running a 6 channel amp.. 25x4 at 12 volt and 60x4 at 14.4 volts(meaning the car is running) and well compared to when i had my deck which is a Kenwood Excelon x917 which 2 years ago sold for 800$ cdn when new.. and still comptetes for one of the top in SQ and power... but i added my amp and well before i had volume about 26 of 35.. and that was pretty loud.. now with my amp i use 20 volume of 35 and this is waaaay beyond what i had.. and can go waaaay louder.. but my ears cant take it.. and so basically if your not trying to win no competition.. you dont need to spend extra $ for nothing if your not gonna use it.
Also the SQ changed dramatically by amping them... even at same volumes... mind you my amp was 1400$ so it should but.. in any case it will improve alot...
So bassically i say you dont need any more than 50 x4 because by the sounds of it thats not what your looking for

The "average" deck puts out about 12 watts rms, not 20.

right, i'm not looking for high performance, however, i'd rather have power to spare, than fall up short. You can always turn down the gains on the amp, and most radios have a setting to adjust to quiet it down a lil bit.

yeah, with the exception of the new v-drive alpine units, they put out around 25-30w rms, thats why the 9833 and 9835 require a 10guage wiring kit if you using the internal amp

By the way, i checked my manual, my JVC KDLH300 puts out 19 RMS.

Guess I haven't looked at high-end decks in too long. That is quite a lot of power for a HU.
Still, even 20-30 watts rms is way to low power to adequately power most aftermarket speakers IMO.

my cda-9835 puts out 26w rms and 60w max, but i use the pre-outs so that doesn't even matter

i almost bought the 9835 yesterday as an impulse buy. but i talked myself out of it. i would like to put it in my truck, but that would eliminate my keg, which i love. i would put it in emily's car if i could find someone to buy her cd player and cd changer for about the same price.

Alright! got the amp and install kit in on 10-12-04 and put them in that night. After hooking up one of the speakers up backwards, i got everything in and adjusted. MAN . . .WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!!! Thanx to all of you that conviniced me that putting an amp behind them would make a huge difference. I wasn't so sure at first, but i am now!! GAOC rocks!!!
