View Full Version : Car voting was tough for me. Anyone else?

Man I must have took 30 min if not longer voting. I wish I could have picked them all.
Hardest thing was is I would see a car I really liked but the glair was bad or to dark, or the background just didn't help out the pic. Very hard to narrow down my choices. I actually had to do it on paper. I kept loosing count. LOL
I hope you all had an easyer time voting than I did. My brain hurts now, I think I will go take a nap.

Yeah, me too. I tried to be as fair as possible.
What bothers me about the poll - seems that only the tricked out or SC/T style GA's are being picked in the majority. Alot of the ones with SD or SC/T hoods seem to have the majority of the votes. Already unfair.
I think in the end that all GA's should be represented in this calendar, not only the tricked out ones.
Background and stance is also important.

Depends on who is voting ... to me, it is all to do with the picture and not so much the car in it ... yes, the car is important but the quality of the picture is preferred in my opinion.
In regards to having ALL Grand Ams represented, I would like to see this as well ... here's hoping ... got to remember though, the more flashy the car, the more popular it or its driver may be so it is human nature to vote for friends and there isn't much we can do about that, sorry :(

:agree: I love a beautiful car... but the scenery around it is extreamly important to me... maybe more than the car.
AFA the voting itself, I feel as though I was as fair as I possibly could, minus voting for my man obviously :)

I have to agree my votes were not just car but the over all shot. I was thinking more of the lines of would you see this shot on a professional mag cover.
If pic 50 would have been in color OMG that would have been my first vote. Awsome shot, I just don't care much for B/W.

So, let me ask you a serious question.....say, for example, there is a car on here that has a really large amount of votes, and you pretty much know that it is because of their amount of friends in the community, and you decide that you do not want it in the calendar.....will you make that decision or will you put it in based on the large amount of votes? Hope that makes sense.
I guess what I am trying to say is that there are quite a few submissions that are really nice, clean, and the picture is SHARP. What if those cars don't get more than a few votes? Will they still have an opportunity to be chosen?
99GrandAMSE
10-01-2004, 08:42 AM
... problem is, we wanted the Calendar to be "as chosen by the membership" so if I overrule their choices there wasn't much sense in proceeding along through this the way we have when I could have simply pick them all myself ... if this doesn't appear to work out fairly, next year we may have to re-evaluate how this is handled but we have to start someplace :)

Are we allowed to submit more pictures or is it locked?
Chain

It’s locked voting already started.
As far as being fair and all the other stuff I have read, I do not seem to see what all the problem is. It’s a vote left up to the GA community of this forum. Seems fair to me and I think it was an awesome idea and was done as fair as possible.
I think these guys are doing a great job.

First time through, i picked the 5 or 6 or so that REALLY stood out as far as the car went. Then I picked out the rest that had good picture setting. Then I picked the only 89-91 Ga there. Then I filled. G-Damn I wish I entered that thing.

honestly I do not think being popular has anything to do with it.
I like the looks of mods and if a car has mods and its a good pic I am going to vote for it. I dont even like 4 doors but there was a few that was just a dang nice pic all around so I voted for it.
Sorry to say there was a few others that if not for the glair, background, bad angle they would have gotten my vote. Its all good fun, I am looking forward to seeing the outcome. You can just about tell already. LOL

Right? I was under the impression that one of the key factors for the submittal was that your picture was of good, clean quality. Also, backdrop IS important, but at the same time, should NOT take away from the center of interest, correct? Quite a few pics I find myself staring at the pretty backrop more than I do the car in the picture.

Hmmmm.....so I can see that one of the months there is going to be a blurry shot of a black car next to a shiny purple building. Not sure what type of car it is, it is soo far away.....and blurry.
Amazes me that a very bad picture such as #38 would have more votes than alot of pictures that are of great quality.
Total popularity contest.

I do not see how everyone keeps calling it a popularity contest. I could not put but maybe two names with any car on there. And why would you vote for a car you do not like?
Well we all think we have a awsome great looking car and think it should get the votes.
Fact I have to face, Older ga, no mods, rims most dont like. But I actuall didn't plan on making the calendar I was just glad to get my car fixed from the wreck.
I know at least 7 or 9 of the top ones I voted for. I mean freaking nice car with just the perfect setting. Why wouldn't anyone vote for it?
BTW the blurry pics will not make the calender that has been posted in the rules.

Actually, I had a hard time voting because I was more interested in just how the photo would look on a calender. Some of the cars I really like didn't have a great backdrop and some of the cars I'm not thrilled about did.
I'm dissapointed that there are not and pre-99 GAs in the top 12 and I was also disppointed that some the nicest pre 99s didn't submit a photo.

i have 3 suggestions for people when taking pics
1 dont be affraid, its a car, its not going to hurt to get close
Ex: pic 29, 4, 13, 22,
2 most calanders of cars show the whole car not bi sections or just a top half..
Ex: pic 27, 33, 37, 42
3 take into effect that pics are not based on the car but the whole pic like everyone has said. and the SC/T or BK cars dont need to win and frankly i dont even want to see pic 29 in there because it could have been 100 times better..
i am not saying that my pics are any better, but i still think that a majority of you could have done a better job

Personally I think it was an awesome idea and handled the best way I can see. The only thing we might do next year (I am sure we will do it again because it’s really cool idea). Not allow submissions if they do not meet the criteria. Meaning Size of pixels. That will just keep a car that cant make the calendar from maybe even winning not getting his car posted on the calendar because when its blown up its all pixels and blurry.
No kissing up here but I don't see what all the problem is. I think everything was fair and done with the best intentions in mind. I just had trouble picking 12 because there is so many cool GA’s to pick from.

This was a good idea. The only bad thing is when you have a huge amount of people, everyone isn't gonna be pleased with the outcome, some people will be or try to be biased with voting some won't,some will vote for the car, which I mean is the focal point, its the part of the picture that stands out,it is a Grand Am OwnersClub Calender, not just a background calender, still have to have grea background tho....I do think next year or the next time one is put out,let the Administrators hand pic, since this was based off the GA of the Week, and those being picked by Kelly or Shawn, the same should go for the Calender, that way theres no arguing about popularity,we all know Shawn and Kelly are guys that don't just pick the car they feel is the single most awesome car,cuz every single car is different, some modify, some stay stock. But like I said, should have been Shawn and Kelly that picked the 12,no one argues with their dicision,if they don't like it then too bad, life goes on.I only submitted a photo cuz I thought it was a great idea and liked the idea of having my car in a Calender or something that would let it be seen and also to see other members cars since some people don't often show pictures of their cars.

Man number 29 looks really nice that looks good with the building in it actually all the pics look very nice everyone took a good pic of their cars. To me it is not how the pic looks it is the effort of actualy going somewhere taking a pic and entering it. That says alot to me about those who entered. Once again great looking pics actualy they all are except one and that would be mine.

The obvious reason #29 isn't up close and personal was to take advantage of the great background which complements the vehicle prefectly.
And please explain how #29 could have been 100 times better and still being an amature photo?

Very well said. I am sorry if it the voting is not going the way some had hopped, but this is the first time we have done anthing like this there is going to be proplems. In fact if the mods and admin or just the admin decided who was going to be in the calander, there would be complants to. I just reviewed (quickley) what the numbers were and I seen Stock looking GA's and modded GA's. As for any "blury" pics in the top 12 I have trust in the guys looking after the calander not no enter anything that is not going to look good in a calanader.
Again we are sorry if the way of picking the car has upset anyone but the voting amoung the peers was seen as the best why to do this.
Again someone is always going to be upset, not matter what you do in life you can not keep everyone happy that is a fact.
So with that said, lets keep this clean (Not saying it isn't) and keep your cool. We all see things in a different light, that is what makes life interesting.

Well seeing as we have a lot of members on this forum I'm sure not everyone know who's car is who's just by the photos. I personally only know a few of them because I have seen them in person with my own two eyes. I think the fact that there are numbers assigned to the photo and not screen names helps reduce the popularity contest a little.
Either way if that is the photo people want to look at for a entire month, then the people have spoken.

Well, if you want to make a personal comment to someone make it through PMs. These are PUBLIC forums, that means everybody can read them and mods WILL comment on any post that seems to be inappropriate, as yours was.
You're lucky you didn't get an official warning for that post...

the reason why i said 29 could have been 100 times better is because it looks as if he/she took no planning in the picture. its like an "oh this is ok" rand out and took the pic then went and got back in their car before they got hit or something to that idea. but it could have been better for a few reasons
1 angle, i think more of a direct shot to slightly down would have worked, not the angle from where the person is standing because you can tell the shot was setup
2 effect, the building is HUGE compared to his grand am.. i think that if he would have gotten closer that the idea would have been the same
but thats my idea and it still would have looked amature.
sorry for being upset that people like the shots that i personally dont think look good at all.
but thats just me..
and i am in a bad mood because i blew my amp in my car and have no money to fix it.

basically i think some of us who thought they took a good picture are not getting chosen but some of the pictures are not as good as some of the others and they are getting more votes i guess i really dont understand why? and it really doesnt matter . maybe they could leave one month for people who buy the calender to have their picture in the calender just a idea i dont know but argueing over it doesnt help whats done is done

If all the pics were the same it would be a pretty boring calendar indeed. A little creativity goes a long way, and the results of the polls show that.
I still can't believe the immaturity displayed by several members in this thread. Believe me, we weren't expecting a response quite like this. :sad2:

12 cars total including
1 - pre 1991
2 - 1992-1995
4 - 1996-1998
5 - 1999-2005
people then vote on their favorites in the four categories....to keep it more "fair" (as some people put it). This way...the majority still gets more representation, but the minority still gets at least some.
each of those categories had multiple entires, so there is still something to vote on for each.

Theoretically, that could still be done this year. The top 5 '99+ GAs would go in the calendar, top 4 '96-'99, top 2 '92-'95, and top '85-'91 from the current votes could get included in the calendar. :hmmm:

and a collage of all the grand am's that dont make it...
Like Put the top 10 on the calendar...
1 for the admins
and 1 for everyone else you doesnt make it...
Just think about sales. If someone's car doesnt make it in more likely than not they wont buy the calendar.
But if you make a collage. Than thats 62 sales guarenteed

I know that my car will probably not be voted in the calendar (even though it is a nice winter picture) but I will still buy a calendar.
As of right now I do not agree with the votes (because I think some people are going for a popular car).
Not ranting or anything like that.... It will still be a nice calendar.
I am disapointed with the attitude of many of you. I know personally when I was voting, I was looking at background first, and car second, and then taking into account the overall effect of the picture, hell I was thinking about what pictures I woudl like to stare at for a whole month. Not which member I could kiss up to. I guess I am dissapointed that I too did not submitt a picture of my ga, then I coudl join in the *****ing too :shake: Seriously, grow up. Remember, this is a new thing, that we have not done before, and there are bound to be peopel that disagree with the way it's being done, But maybe things will change for next year. Peronsally I believe Kelly and Shawn have set this up perfectly, and that it is fine just the way it is, they don't need the added stress of people freaking out because they are upset they didn't get in a calendar, I mean really, think about it "oh no I didn't make it into an online car club calendar, I think it's the end of the world, I might as well shoot myself"
Pretty silly right?
Let's get back to voting for the pictures that look the best, and let's hope the calendar turns out great for everyone, I think it's a great idea, and I think it's going to look great!

Well i'm number 22 and i agree but I'm no photo expert, so I just gave it my best shot. I think it came out ok. And if I were to get closer how do I get any background in to the scene. I thought it was partly based on that.

ok well dont think that i dont like the pic, or that its bad, because it has way more votes than mine does.. (which i dont care about because i am not going to get yelled at) but, the reason why i said that you could have gotten closer is because you cant see your car on the background very well, if it were a white car it would have been a good shot because its a dark area and the shading really helps to dynamically bring out the car. but since its a black car, its kind of like you are trying to hide it from view. there is no reason to leave that much room IMO but dont yell at me. like i said you have plenty more votes that my pic (50) does. so obviously you took the better shot than i did. i guess i was wrong.
Brad97GS
10-04-2004, 11:26 AM
Actually IMO the black car fits well with the dark background - giving a sort of "mystery" look. I also think that the bright lighting on the building and around the car contrast well with the dark surroundings. I think a white car would have taken away the mystery appearance.
There are many ways to take a good picture. We have at least two incredible photographers on this site - MagusXIII and Mike Reyna (neither of whom own Grand Ams, so they aren't competing). It may be fun for someone interested to search for posts of theirs that talk about photography. I have gotten some very good advice from them. :)

WHy stop at 24? why not just have the top 62 to make everyone happy? honestly guys, Lets think about this, this is turning from a nice idea brought to you by the administration of the board and turning into a joke, I know we will be taking ideas from thsi years and putting it towards next years, but really isn't the point of this just for some fun? let's not think of it as winners and losers, but think of what it should be ....fun!, I know it sucks if your car doesnt make the cut, but why instead of trying to find a way to get everyone in their, not take it as a challenge for next year? Yeah, I honestly didnt care if I won or not, I just wanted to see if I could still get in.
I see how people would think, if you let more cars in, more sales would come about. This is very true. People who make it in there, even if they arent focused as a month will still buy the calendar. They were just tryin to state that the more cars, the more sales. And I dont think any normal person would think it was tacky to have an extra part on the calendar for other grand am's. It is a calendar to support a group. Most likly the only people buying this calendar will be grand am owners.
On the other hand, I can see why there would only be 12 cars. Of course, one for each month, and to promote competition to a certain extent. People probably aren't going to care who wins, but like stated... thats what next year is for.
How about next year we have month oriented pictures. Like December would have a christmas theme with it and january could have a little champaign bottle sittin on the cars hood. Something stupid like that for every month. And in the back, include other featured cars for a fee of $5 to enter your car.
-Just something from the kid.

I also wanted to thank for allowing me in with my late entry. As to all these ideas, common guys, just accept what you get and be happy with it. In a few days you should expect to see a email from Cafepress saying that you violated trademark images of your own car becuase you are selling images of a Pontiac and GM owns rights to it and not you.
I ran into the same problem when I tired to make a calender for my club members and they wanted some legal release from GM saying it was ok to use those images.
The GAOC has aquired this, that is why it's ok for Kelly and Shawn to use things like the arrowhead logo and such.

If you have Microsoft Publisher or similar, you can make your own calendar and then take it somewhere to be printed. I made my girlfriend a calendar for 2003 using Publisher, and it turned out well.
Maybe I shouldn't be saying this....because I hope everyone buys the GAOC calendar! :)

There is a subtle 'gotcha' here, and that's that with CafePress, the items you design are considered to be sold to the public, even if you only want to make one for yourself. The Pontiac Arrowhead and fonts are GM's trademarks. You can not sell any item bearing those trademarks without permission. Contact GM's marketing department to obtain permission.
Check with CafePress's terms of use, it's all there in black and white. http://www.cafepress.com/cp/info/help/law.aspx
Examples of Prohibited Content
Because of intellectual property laws, CafePress.com has certain rules regarding the types of merchandise that you can make and sell through its service. For example:
NO UNOFFICIAL MERCHANDISE
NO use of names, logos, pictures or other intellectual property of musical groups or musical artists. For example, you cannot make Britney Spears merchandise simply because you run a fan-based Britney Spears website or just because you downloaded her image from an internet website. You also cannot modify the name or other intellectual property of a musical group and avoid infringement, (e.g., using Metalika instead of Metallica).
NO use of names, logos, pictures, or other intellectual property of sports teams, colleges/universities, clubs, or organizations such as the Los Angeles Lakers, Harvard University, or The Boy Scouts. Again, modifications do not avoid infringement.
NO photos, logos, caricatures, or other artwork depicting celebrities, such as Michael Jackson or Madonna, or other third parties. Just because you take a photograph of a celebrity does not give you the right to use that photograph on merchandise, even if you digitally manipulate the photograph.
NO use of trademarks, names, or logos of companies. For example, you cannot use the name of a company such as Nike®, a company logo such as the Nike "swoosh" trademark, or brand name such as Coca Cola®, or a modified version of a trademark, (e.g., "Just Did It").
NO pictures or photographs of products (such as automobiles or toys). Even if you own a product, trademark laws still prohibit you from selling merchandise that features pictures of it. For example, you cannot take a picture of your car and then sell t-shirts or mugs with that picture.
I took the photo, so I can use it however I want.
FALSE. Simply taking a photo of a person, company, band, logo or the like does not afford you the right to sell merchandise featuring that photograph. There are two distinct intellectual property rights in a photograph: (1) the rights in the photograph itself and (2) the rights in the subject of the picture, such as the product or person shown in it. For example, if you take a photo of a car or celebrity, you only own the rights to the photo, but not the right to use the photo of the car or celebrity for merchandise sale. In order to sell merchandise with the image, you will need to obtain explicit permission from the car company or celebrity.

Well its the last day. I can't wait to see the results. I know I'll prolly end up not getting in it, no regrets other then in Springfield,Ohio, where I live, theres not really any place that I could take a picture that would be close to competing with other pictures, that would be my only regret, not everyone lives in an area that is good for a beautiful/awesome backdrop.Still will buy the calender though, nothing worse then a sore loser IMO. Congrats to the possible winners:)

I wish the picture posted showed the actual quality of my photo though. It looks a little blurry.
Wow wierd it looks better then that as well. Its like a 2200 res pic quality anyone know why it does that.
