I may be giving up my GA soon, for an 88 IROC-Z. I've always wanted an F-Body, and this one is too good to pass up. Don't completely know yet. I wish I could keep the GA and the IROC, but I can't afford insurance on both.

It only took me gazing at the 350 to sell me. I've never had a FAST car before. It's about damned time. I put my time in with 4 banger and V6's. It's time for my well earned V8.

The IROC-Z's, if well taken care of, are very nice cars. Not crazy about the interior of the third gen F-Bodys, but, considering I drive a late model 99 Firebird, I feel your pain. I'm happy with my two V6 engines though...Grand Am and Firebird both.

IIRC the engine you are talking about has TPI. This engine is not "fast" in any way. My manager had a Trans Am GTA with the same engine and it was a disgrace to the Trans Am name. If I was you I would keep the Grand Am and save your money for something with some real power.

there is a way you can keep both cars. just buy the camaro then put it on the insurance and take the Grand am off of the insurance then you have a winter beater and a summer beatter.

Everything I hear as the 88 IROC outperforming an 88 Mustang GT. I'd be very happy with that. I don't need insane speed, just, SOME speed. I'd be wholly satisfied running mid-14's.

Honestaly I have a Thirdgen F-Body. Save your $ and buy a fourth gen.

The boxiness of the car and the interior in general make me feel like I am stuck in the 70's (even though they didn't start making third gens until 1982)

A 95 or newer Fourth gen would be your best bet.

93 or newer, to be exact. That's the year the body's changed.

I prefer the 98+ ones.

Nah. I'm into older cars. That's kind of the whole point of me getting one.

Whoa! That's even better! I'd MUCH rather have a 60's/70's car, but i'm kinda making a compromise. I don't like 80's cars in general very much, but I like older cars, and it's a trade off between being old and being able to drive it.

Nah. Like I said, I don't really like newer cars. I'd much rather save my money and buy a very minted low mileage 77 Trans Am or something than get a newer car.

The only newer cars I like are ones I can't have (Astin Martin Vanquish, Lamborghini's, Ferrarri's, etc.) The BRAND new Cadillacs are all awesome too. That's a possibility for later on. Say, in like 2010 get an '04 CTS-V or something.

lol i thought you had a 99+ SeV6

I was going to say keep the GA because its just as fast as a TPI camaro

mid 14's good luck

maybe with headers, hypertech chip

K&N . And cat-back

and thats maybe! get a 97 GTP if you want to go "kinda fast"
or a 93-94 LT1 f-body

Its crazy how Technology works... my GA ran a 15.1 with ONLY exhaust and my father has a 87 Iroc with headers and a few bolt ons. and at the time it only had a (305 i know, LOL) with a 5speed. he was a great driver but only could pull a 15.0 1/4 94MPH with all that work!

He was highly up set with his self

P.S I dont think u could get a 5speed with a 350 back then
it wasnt till 93 when that was available with a 6speed

Well as some people stated the 5.7 or even 5.0 TPI motor are not the fastest cars out there. But for the 11 years they were built the thrid gen FBodies rocked. I personally have owned 4 of them. '86 Camaro w/LG4, '89 RS with a 2.8, '83 Z28 w/L69, and a '92 Z28 with a LB9.

Everyone knocks the TPI motors but that is from those people that know little about them. Build a TPI motor to make simular hp as a Lt1 or LS1 and it will be making gobs more torque due to their long intake runners. Even with a 305 it's a great start. A 5.0 or 5.0HO can be built to about 300hp without major modifications. Shoot, my LB9 HO was 230hp stock with 300ft/lbs of torque.

I say forget everyone else and buy the IROC. IMO, the 3rd generation Camaro Z28s were some of the best looking Camaros. I personally think would rather have a '92 Z28 but I have a soft spot for them.

I have the chance right now to purchase a '89 IROCZ. My friend (Y2KGPGT) had torn it apart as a project and lost interest. It has no wheels, no motor, no tranny, and no hood. But all I'd need is a hood. I have a L69 305 and T5 combo already and I can use my 16x8 Xtreme wheels. The car is torn down to nothing and he ahs all brand new '91-'92 rocker extensions and front clip plus the rear '91-'92 Z28 spoiler. Best part is it's rust free and been sitting in a garage since he purchased it. Now if I could just cough up the $800 he wants for it I would be all set.

Here are a few shot of it before and after we started tearing it apart. http://members.fbody.com/chad89z/project.html

Well, the GA stays around for awhile. Didn't realize this IROC I was looking at had 190,000 miles on it.....!!!

I'll keep looking around. An IROC really wasn't my first choice. I'd rather get a Buick Grand National or an Olds 442 or something, but Camaro's are much more common. I'd rather not go out of GM and get a Mustang, but that's looking more and more like the case.

I would consider an 80-something Trans Am, but very rarely do you find those around here in anything even remotely resembling decent condition.

EDIT -

Actually, lol, I have some rather odd demands for my car. It had to be a) old. Generally nothing in the 90's. Early 80's if possible. b) American. Specifically, GM. c) T-Tops. I REALLY want T-Tops. d) "kinda fast"...under 15's, or at least, easily made to do under 15 (like, I know you can make a Buick Regal run 12's for $500)

I hate driving older cars. The interior and everything in them eventually weakens and the general ride of the car starts getting bad.

I also owned a Buick Grand National. An '84 (only 2000 built that year) to be exact with every single option availble (making it even more rare). Unless you have time and money to spend stay away from the Grand National. They are very fussy cars and when something goes on them the parts are hard to find. I loved the car to death, but I sold it cheep because of the reasons above. Here is a few old shots of my GN.

THIRD GENS ALL THE WAY!!!!

Nothing and i MEAN NOTHING looks sexier than a 91-92 Camaro. the GFX on it are just sexy and look mean as hell.

350 TPI= mid 14s. show me a GA that can do that FACTORY.

slap on a set of headers, TB, 1.6 RR, and retune the computer and your in the 13s. oh yea did i forget to mention that your there for under $1500?

but then again as its said "To drive a Third gen F-body requires a love for the car. It's not for the average person"

I'd RATHER do that, but that can wait until later when I can afford it.

I was totally born into the wrong generation of cars. Nothing from like, '93-on catches my interest at all. I kinda like the newer Trans Ams. The old ones are BETTER, but the newer Trans Ams are ok. Brand brand new Cadillacs are cool. That's about it.

Well if you end up getting a 3rd gen and need any parts let TA^Guy or myself know and we could help out. I have alot of parts for a 3rd gen just laying around the house. If I don't have it might know where to get it for a good price. Godd luck.

Thanks. It's a real possibility that i'll eventually get a 3rd gen...like I said, it all comes down to the compromise. I LIKE the 3rd gens, but not as much as some other ones..however...the other ones I like are more difficult to pull off.

I'll defiantly remember that, though.
