I have a 98' Grand Am GT 3100 and I am looking for a performance chip thats actually worth a damn but wont break the bank...I've just got out of the import scene bc of those damn ricers and I really just dont know much about American FWD cars.
The other big question i have is what nitrous kit is recomended for the car i have...I've been looking at a zex kit but I want to be sure to have the safest kit for the motor and the least amount of bull shit installing it.
Thanks,
The Dude

1 more question, lol...what is the sensors purpose that is mounted in the top of the air box, i installed a cone fileter and its now throwing a code so im just kinda wondering if its going to hender performance or hurt the engine in any way.

I think you mean the IAT sensor . It is used by the computer to adjust the A/F ratio according to the air temp going into the intake . It should be put back into the intake pipe so it will function again . :)

Since you said you put a cone filter on, I'm assuming you just attached it to the MAF. Therefore there is nowhere for you to attach the sensor. I agree with Colin that it should be put in a pipe. I would try to get a hold of some 3" and drill a hole and attach it to that. For the time being though, reconnect the sensor from the airbox to the plug, and tape/zip tie it to the little bracket that your old airbox used to bolt to near the strut tower.

Thanks for the advice but does anybody know about nitrous oxide and a performance chip/upgrade for the 3100

talk to Magus about the nitrous, hes the guy with it and that knows the most. From what I know, if you can, go for a "wet" kit with no more than a 75 shot. 50 should give you plenty and you will have to talk to someone else about a 3100 chip. IMO a zex kit should be fine.

A word on "performance chips"...
1. You won't get much out of it alone. It's further enhances flows mods (intake/exhaust) by adding more fuel. In other words, a chip is not a good starting point. (if anyone even makes one for your app)
2. Beware of cheap "performance modules" aka IAT resister in a box. Useless. Anything worthwhile will require PCM reprogram or PCM piggyback connection.
3. Chip + nitrous are conflicting mods. 1 or the other, not both. Most chips advance ignition timing. For Nitrous you'll actually want to retard the timing to prevent engine-damaging detonation. Advanced timing + nitrous = burnt pistons

Thanks For the information...I owned a turbo car before the grand am and it was a lot simpler to modify and get "easy" power out of.

infact It adjusts Timing based on Inlet Air Temp. ,
The MAF Adjusts fuel based on incoming air Volume, MAP Adjusts Air fuel by mesuring manifold pressureand 02 Sensors are responable for Monitoring the Nerroband air fuel ratio for emissions and minor adjustments to the AF ratio, in the case of a messed up rear O2/Cat it leans it right the **** out.
BUT its all relavent.

The IAT mod (in all its many Ebay forms) is a scam. A search will get you much info.
