View Full Version : Question about the 3.5L in the G6
Hello all
I would like to know, where the 3.5L engine that is in the G6 and malibu comes from. I know that the 3.4L in the GA is actualy a bored out 3.1L. Is the 3.5L the same that's in the Saturn Vue(redline) the Honda engine? Or is this one a different one.
Thank you

I've seen one up close... appears to be based on the current 3x00 60 degree pushrod V6's.

Yep, both new 3500 and 3900 engines on the Epsilon platform are based on the current 3100/3400
Well, if they are based on the 3.1 and of course the 3.4, I hope they fix the coolent leaking problem......

I wonder who will be the first to try upgrading to the new engine.

so if they are based on the current 3400 then perhaps we could swap in a 3500 for the 3400? id much rather have a 3500 then a 3400..

Honestly unless there is a don of difference in the engine or yours on its way out the 3400 to the 3500 would just not be a worthwhile expense.

I dunno, it kinda irritates me that they are giving the 3.9L more power than the stock V6 Firebirds and Camaros...
What a slap to the face that is.

well I don't see why it should, newer cars are making more horsepower than older ones, the C6 Vette makes more hp than a C5, the Neon SRT4 makes more horsepower than an Avenger, I don't see why it should bother you, I'm sure when the F-bodies come back they'll have more horsepower than the 3.9 does

What stock V6 Firebirds and Camaros? There hasn't been a Camaro or Firebird built in five years!

Why? It's nothing new.
In the 1990 model year, a GA SE equiped with an HO Quad 4 made more HP than the optional 5.0L V8 f-body. (this was the base V8 model tho)

it makes no sense why they shouldnt make more power although a '90GA making more HP then a 305?
i thought those were at least above 200 hp, like around 230 or something...

HO Quad 4 - 180 HP
5.0 V8 - 170 HP
There was a 5.7 that put down some good numbers, and another mid-grade V8 that was close to 200HP. I have a 1990 Pontiac dealer brochure, I'll have to look at it again.
80's V8's were pretty weak... fuel injection really was really in it's infancy.

I believe the stock 305's put out somewhere around 190hp, but don't quote me on that

It's 170... I know this for fact. I'll just scan it tonight.

i'd like to try to cram a 3500 into my car when my 3100 goes kaputz. i wonder if they use the same engine mounts as the 3100/3400?
there's alot of discussion on 60degreev6.com about the 3500 and the new 3.9l....

Well, if they were still building Camaros and Firebirds, I'd agree with you. Since those models have gone to their grave, as I'm sure you now know, if you didn't before, and I suspect GM would have done some tweaking of their engines in order for them to maintain their place as the performers in the respective automotive food chain.
The simple truth, things change. For instance, the 2005 Mustang stock V6 has more power than the previous version. Now that I mention that, I'm waiting for the tall tales of GAs racing them and beating them 'by n car lengths!'...... :roll2:

The v8s of the 1980s sucked because of emissions also. Catalytic converters were just starting to get better (these days the new ones flow well for most/any mods). Those old cats were like sticking a cork up the exhaust pipe.

good luck putting a 3.5L in, considering the cars are using a 32-bit ecu now. I'd imagnie the amount of wiring is quite a bit more. Although I do recall them saying the ECU is directly mounted to the engine block, or somewhere on the engine now. I can only imagine the support they'd need. As far as mounts, I bet those will change somewhat as well.
