I finally got the new water pump on and bolted up... The thing is when I was loosening the tensioner bolt I loosened it too much and the whole assembly came out and there was major slack in the belt... I went and reinstalled the wheel/tensioner and there is still so much slack in the belt... I know I was not suppose to loosen the tensioner assembly/bolt untill it fell off, but it was an honest mistake... Question is, how do I fix it now? The car is sitting on jackstands in the garage and need an answer by tomorrow morning... Thanks : )

PS... The car is a 94 grand am se v6 3.1

Are you sure the belt is around all the pullys it should be. Are they on the correct side of the pullys? Meaning the belt goes over the top of some pullys and under others.

Also do a search on replacing the belt. I think Shawn made one up in the garage section.

The tensioner assembly has a locating pin on the backof it, make sure that is installed into the pin hole and the tensioner is flush against the timing case cover. Also as 4kqaud stated, check the belt routing.

Actually, you weren't supposed to loosen the tensioner bolt AT ALL (at least, if your '94 is like my '96)
The tensioner on this engine is one of the simplest I've ever seen.
So simple, in fact, that the 'obvious' doesn't occur to most people.

Similarly, installing it correctly is pretty simple, as long as you do as HeyDace said and mount it properly.

THEN snake the belt around. There's a routing decal on the firewall of mine, hope yours shows it too.

Is it the old belt or a new one? If new, compare to old to make sure you have the right one.

Good luck.
