View Full Version : Very Confuzzled.... Wiring new HU

Alright, so I'm wiring in my new Sony CDX-F5505 HU into my '03 GA via a GMRC-01 harness. I got the speakers hooked up fine, and the chimes work, but I can't get the HU to turn on. From the harness there's an Orange line, a Orange line w/ a white stripe, a red line, and a black line. Now, from the HU, I got the black ground, and a red line and a yellow line for power. Anyone know which combonation these should be hooked up? It's just the HU going into the stock speakers and amp, nothing else. I'm used to hard wiring new HU's in, and it's confusing the hell out of me. Also, where in there is a good place to ground?

Well here are the normal colors White and Grey Are front, Green and purple are back (solid colors are pos, stripes are neg) Red Ign should only have power with key on, yellow constent power, black ground, Blue Remote (for amp), Bule/strip (power ant) Orange (illumination)

Right, all of that I'm cool with.... but do I need to tap an alternitive spot for power though? Or is that big metal thing in the back of the dash a bad ground? Like I said, the chime module is working fine, but I'm not getting any power to my HU.
Also, has anyone had their trunk pop after they reconnect the ground to the battery? I had it happen to me twice today and it confused the hell out of me.

Alright... after hours of browsing through this forum ( got to page 55), I've decided what I'm going to do.... Find a place in the morning that sells that Fuse tap like Crutchfeild's harness has. Otherwise, I'm not going to have to tap into anything else stock, am I? Why did GM have to make this oh-so much fun for us '01+ owners?

Ok, I got the HU to work, and now it's mounted and lookin decent. I ended up buying one of those 'Add-a-Circuit' things and used that.... but what I'm still confused about is the two orange lines.... one says dimmer and the other illumination, but neither of them do anything for me. I don't have them hooked up to anything and it works fine, so what are they for?

Use the red wire on this harness to hook to the red wire on your Sony headunit. (there is no need to run a wire to do this) And then hook the yellow and black wires from your Sony head unit to the yellow and black wires on the harness. This is what I did when I installed my deck and it works fine.

You made this work in what i'll assume was a monsoon system, right? For whatever reason when I did that with mine I had absolutely no power to my new HU. Trust me, if it was that easy I would of never started this thread. The wiring that I did do makes this thing work great, except for one thing. Every time the car is off for more than 2 minutes, the HU reset's itself, which is really pissing me off..... Now, could 1 of the 2 orange wires have something to do with this? Everything else is working fine, but I do have those 2 wires taped up.

Yea it is a monsoon system.
It makes no sense that it wouldn't work for you. Maybe the harness is defective. I don't think the orange wires have anything to do with the memory of the radio. I didn't use the orange wire but I did use the orange/white wire so my head unit would dim when my headlights come on. The yellow wire is the wire that should supply constant power to your headunit and allow it to retain memory.

Like I said, I taped up my two orange wires... The solid orange one, illumination, didn't do a thing, but I'm getting the illumination out of the thin neon yellow wire, not the thick regular yellow wire. What did you hook the dimmer wire up to? Does anyone know of a constant 12v line in this car? I have the Add-a-Circuit thing hooked up like the Fuse Tap in the pic in this thread.

The orange and orange with white wires will show a + power when the dash lights in your car are on, the one for dimmer works for eimmer, you shoudl not need either of those with your sony hu, i spilced my neon into this harness onthe dimmer wire, which makes it dim just the same as the dash lights.

Sounds like a plan, I'll be doing that in the morning.... but, I'm still confused on where I should be tapping that 12v line into so it doesn't erase all the memory...
no idea man, wheneer i have done any systems it has been as straight forward as red - red, yellow - yellow, black - black, white - thie, etc....

I had some time today to play with this problem again... I tried every 10a fuse on the drivers side.... either it would cause the same problem, or it would stay on completely... meaning, i can turn off the car, open the door, close it, walk inside, have a beer, and the HU would still be on.... which sucks, cause that will kill my battery. So, when I actually get another day off from work, I'm going to try the passenger side next.

the red wire is the constant hot from the HU, in the GA(95 atleast), its an orange wire. that is what keeps your memory...or atleast is supposed to.
