heads are the top part of the piston your car already has heads the thing is some heads produce a higher compression ratio than others depending on the design the higher the compression ratio the horsepower so if you switch to higher compression heads you can get more power out of your motor the catch is depending on how high you go youll have to start buying only premium fuel because youll need a higher octain and because of the bigger explosion in the combustion chamber you might need to redo some of the internals with stronger ones in case your thinking about doing it

For the 60° motors, the 3100 and 3400 SFI have about the highest compression heads you can get without milling them substantially. The name of the game with these heads is air flow. Air flow is increased by porting and polishing, and installing slightyly larger valves. Cylinder heads also can determine maximum safe operating engine speed, with the use of higher spring pressures, you will increase safe operating speed because the valves can close much faster. Be careful on valve size selection. Overkill in this area can and often will shroud the spark plug and actually impede air flow because of the umbrella effect. Also be careful with spring selection. Overkill on those can lead to premature cam lobe wear and rocker arm failure, and even valve seat loosening.

The heads are the upper part of your engine. They form the "cap" or the top of the combustion chamber. The head in conjuction of the cam controll direction of air flow in your engine. It has valves that open and close to allow air/fuel into the chamber and to allow the burnt gases out via the exhaust pipe. There is a model out there that would be good to learn with. It costs about 30 bucks and it is a model of a V8 and it is clear and you can see how everything works. You might want to do it so that you can see how it all works. You might be able to find one at a local hobby shop. That is what got me interested in cars so long ago....
