My subs have started to stop working and every once in a while they will turn back on but not for very long. There is power to the amp but the subs aren't kickin. I am figuring there is a short in the back of the HU but i was just wondering if any of you guys have any ideas what else could be the problem, before I tear apart my HU. Thanks for any help.

I wouldn't rip apart the HU just yet. Double-check all connections, try new RCA cables, check your ground, etc.

Yeah, don't rip apart the HU yet. That would probably be the last thing I would do. Like Shawn said, check all of your connections. If you just started having the problem, then it could be a possible loose connection (power/ground). How long have you had your sytem? Make sure you have a large enough power wire to handle the amp. I know a guy who was running 10 guage when he needed 4, the subs kept cutting in and out until he almost had a fire under the hood. Also is the amp turning on an off? could be your remote wire too. Just check everything over twice.

try a different fuse in the power wire. i had a bad fuse one time that was not broken but would work only sometime..replaced with a new one and it all works fine now.

The amp has constant power all the time...its just the subs start and stop working. I just double checked all the wires and everything is alright from what i can see.

LOL at way2crazy....yeah the HU is a sony explode....whats that mean. Oh and its used too.

It means it's time to get a new headunit...

Wonderful...another thing to add to the "Things i need/want but dont have the money for" list. Anyways, would it help any if I changed the sub outputs in the back of the HU to the FRONT instead of the REAR outs? I am thinking that it wont help but just wondering.

EDIT: Might as well start getting suggestions on some good HU out there, since it looks like i am going to have to buy another one.

Check all your wire first. Connect another sub to amp to see if you have a bad speaker

Try only connecting one sub at a time. Maybe it's your amp and not your deck? Or maybe it's your subs. Take them out of the box and check them.

could be bad grounds, is there paint where you grounded the amp? if so scratch it off, also could be the internal parts of the amp shaken loose, is the amp mounted to the sub box or some other part of the car that takes a hard beating like the sides of something? could be the headunit has rattled loose, when you installed the HU did you leave some of the bracket in the back? or it could just be faulty equipment

Definitely look at the connections first , sounds like a bad rca cable to me.

Note for all the Sony haters, it may not be the top of the end equipment, but I am goign on over two years with my hu, and a year with my changer without any problems whatsoever ;) Not all of their hu's are "crap"

Make sure also that the amps do not have a auto shut off when they get hot. Is there plenty of air space?

another thing to look at would be the tinsel leads coming from the voice coil of the sub, to the speaker terminal on the sub itself.

they can be repaired temp. by careful soldering, definately not for long term use afterwards.
