hey, I was wondering what Manual transmission swaps can we do to our cars. Im tired of my Automatic. do I need a 2.4 tranny, or can I use something else? Would a sunfire or cavy 2.4 manual tranny work?

a 2.4L manual tranny from a 00+ modeled j-body or n-body that has been equipped w/ the 2.4L.

you need the tranny the tranny mounts I'm pretty sure, the shift linkage, shifter, and pcm from the doner car.. make things easier and find a crapped out alero or grand am that has a 2.4 and 5spd.

oh yeah, one more thing.. Does the tranny bolt up in place, or do I have to fab anything?

the tranny is meant for the motor... you're going to have to find a clutch, throw out bearing.. the usual necessities needed

I hate being the "short answer" guy, but in a nutshell, no. Long answer is yes, with many "buts".

how about you be appropriate and try talking to the 3400 guys, they should know more about mating a manual to a 3400 than us 2.4 guys.

I would love a manual in my grand am,but I look back at the days I have been stuck on traffic and said I wish I had a auto.

The tranny is a Getreg F23/M86. I'm about three quarters of the way done with my 2.4L auto to manual tranny swap. The tranny bolts right up. Do a search and you will find a list of parts needed to do the swap. It is pretty complete and served me well but there were some parts missing, flywheel bolts ($36 from the Pontiac dealer, ouch), tranny mount bolts, clutch to flywheel bolts, all stuff you will find out along the way. Total cost was just under $2500 and has taken me about two weeks so far. I got lucky and found a brand new crate tranny on EBAY for 600 shipped. I also went with new mounts, master cylinder, rear main seal, Fidenza flywheel, and Centerforce clutch and disk. Got the peddles, shifter, drive axles, and cradle (part of the frame) off a wrecked 2001 GA from the local bone yard. The Haynes manual guided me through most of the removal and installation with only a few omissions. I have been wanting to post up about the swap but was waiting to get it back on the road. I'll update when I'm done.

so what're you going to do about the pcm when it freaks out when there's no auto tranny?

azeniskid, didn't have to do anything. the car fired right up with two idiot lights (SES and trac off). been driving it for two days now. I am going to try swapping out the PCM with the one I got from the donor car. don't think that will work tho cause I can't imagine that the passlock II voltage will be the same and I didn't think about that before spending $50 bucks on it. anyway second choice is to go to Pontiac and have them reflash my PCM. The car is not running perfect tho cause I think the PCM is still trying to control the throttle (the RPM's don't come right down when I shift, maybe 1/2 to 1 second). anyway I'll let you know how the fix is going when corrected. Pontiac alredy told me they could reflash to manual.

reflashing it with the manual goodies would be your best bet... it'll make everything happy......

only 2000 GA w/ a 5spd too... heh.

got the donor car PCM in and the car is great to drive with the auto bugs gone.no SES and the trac control is now working. thought I would post up to let you know it's done.

I don't know about that. aren't there any other 2000 5 speeds around?

they didn't make a 5spd in 2000, 2001 was the first year.. from waht I know any 2000 with a 5spd was actually a 2001 car.
