does anyone know of any performance upgrades that can be done to a 2.3 single cam?

heh not much if at all.

Sorry to be the one to tell you this, but the SOHC might be the wimpiest engine in our cars. Its no race engine by any stretch of the imagination.

That being said, your best bet is an engine swap. The highest performance quad 4 engine is the DOHC High Output. It has 175-190 HP depending on what year. Matched with a 5spd tranny, that thing will GO!

There are a few options if you want performance, but infortunatley it doesnt involve the engine you have heh.

You can always do the intake and exhaust deal to give you a handful of extra ponies tho.

doesn't look like it could be as hard as some other swaps, and from what i've seen it would be well worth the money, even though i'd be giving up about 2-3 miles per gallon,it seems like it'll be woth it,even though gas is over 2 bucks a gallon

I'll bet your gas mileage won't change that much. Well, maybe if you drive it harder than you currently do! But all versions of the Quad get pretty good mileage - some Quad 4 HO owners have gotten over 30 mpg - better than I ever got in my LO (that's a non-HO DOHC).

just going by what msn carpoint claims

Eh, what do they know... :)

My Riviera is only supposed to get up to 29 mpg highway, yet I got 31.1 mpg earlier this year on a highway trip (with 135k miles on the clock). The EPA estimates and other estimates (such as carpoint) are often wrong, IMO. :)

You that much mpg in that monster? Wow, my car sucks lol

Not typically, heh. But when I drive all highway miles like I did that time, that's pretty normal. :) My regular mileage was about 23-24 in the summer, probably 21-22 as we head into the winter months. That's about half and half highway versus city driving.

wow, i calculated the average mpg over a full tank or so, and it came out to be 17.3 or something.

I wouldn't worry at all about decrease in gas mileage for this swap. All of the Quad 4's get great gas mileage when in proper running condition.

On a 6 hour highway trip from between Pittsburg & Philly in my 94 DOHC HO - 31.5 MPG.

75-85 MPH average, sometimes hard acceleration to pass/merge.
2 passengers, luggage for a weekend for 4 people, 1 cooler, $300 of fireworks in the trunk (the car had a full load of stuff)

The top record for my 95 DOHC was 33 MPG.
