View Full Version : Low Gas Light
Going thru gas like crazy these days.
-Tire press is correct.
-New plugs.
-New oil change.
-Hub fixed.
-Don't race or drive it hard.
Question is:
For my car 99 GA GT........when the light goes on signaling low fuel what is my grace period (in KM) that I have ?? I gas up tomorrow and am waiting to last min to get litres/km ratio.
The way it's lookin............I get 300km / tank of gas. That's not right.

ignition wires can make gas mil go down...

Some other considerations: colder weather, more warm up time on higher idol, more accesories running...

well an o2 sensor could cause the engine to run more rich.. even if the engine code isnt on... replacing them is an option but no guarantee .. and alse they arent cheap.. but also i get about 350km's a tank.. and i have a 51L tank.. thats all city driving though

being colder can also make the car use more gas
Colder = more gas useage I know.
Also more run idle time etc etc.
Even with that included 300kms on a tank seems awful low.

You don't have to empty your tank all the way to get mileage. Just fill up til you see gas in the filler neck, reset your trip odometer, drive it as far as you care to drive it, then fill it up so you can see the gas in the filler neck again, and then divide your litres by km's to calculate.
With my 2.4L 1998 grand am I get between 775-830kms using A/C on the highway, and between 650-725 in the winter time.
Keep in mind that using defrost turns on the A/C if it is above about 3 degrees outside. Below that temp the compressor doesn't kick in because the freon is too cold.

Running the tank down low isn't the best thing for the fuel pump . And they aren't cheap to replace .....

DAMN! I thought I was doing well with 470 kms out of a tank. The v6 definitely eats up more gas, but 650 on a bad day for you, now that's just crazy!

I went for 60 km after the light turned on a few times and I still had about 3 litres left in the tank (took 51 litres to fill up). Now don't blame me if you get stranded though, different cars might have gauges that are calibrated differently, etc.
I usually get about 400km a tank in the winter and 550 km in the summer. If you've installed winter tires it'll lower your gas mileage too.

I did a little out of the blue road trip to ATL and got 400miles out of a tank of gas. That 643km from the people up north. I was goin between 80-100 (135-160) the whole way.
Didn't calculate how much I was getting, but on that trip to seattle back in april, seeings as it was all highway, was getting about 650 km's a tank, in winter, city driving, I usually get about 400 km's per tank, but thats gas warming the car as well ;)

Okay, so how does an engine use more gas when its cold? And how come we get better gas milage & performance with a "COLD AIR" Intake?

I just filled up last night. I got a new "personal best". Made it 20 miles after the low gas light came on. I have always heard that there's about a gallon left when the light comes on. I put in just over 14 gallons (I also thought i had a 14 gallon tank). For that tank I got 22.4 mpg. Hope this helps but as Gimli said don't blame me if you run out of gas. Sorry for all you north of the border cause the I don't know the km to mi conversion.

I've done 50km once the light comes on. Usually my fiancee sees the light come on and she wants me to get gas quickly. I've never ran the tank dry. My driving consists of 90% highway driving and country roads (80km/h-115km/h), and very seldom do I venture into the city. City driving just gulps back the fuel even in the 2.4L. I use cruise control 100% of the time on the highway and in the country and I'm a firm believer that it saves me fuel.

Let me try and explain this the best way i can. I will use our 3100 Malibu as a example. On a summer day when I start it The rpm is at 700rpm. On a cold day the rpm it at 1100rpm for about a min till it warms up a little. Normal idle rpm is 350-500 rpm.
That one way it burns gas.
The engine oil and tranny oil is cold so that put a little force on the engine, because the oil is thicker. I know on the Malibu and my grand am. It takes its times before it shifts out of first.
If you are running the front and back defogger, the car is pulling alot of amps off the alternator. Has to even notice how the dash lights dim when you are at a stop sign or red light? But once the car is at operation temp everything is normal.
here is another tip. Try resting the cars computer.
