What there the Specs, HP, TQ all that for the 3.0 in the grand ams? No one on here has one, so i was just wondering, it must be pretty rare
Brad97GS

IIRC, it had 125 hp. I don't know the torque numbers, but I'd guess maybe 160? It is based on the 3800, so it's probably fairly torquey.
Oh, wait, I have a trusty ol' Chilton's manual here. It says 125 hp @ 4900 rpm, 150 lb-ft of torque @ 2400 rpm. 3.80x2.70 (bore x stroke), 9.0:1 compression ratio.

oh thats kinda good, lol This should be sticky, oh wait, no one posts in here, so it will stay up here pretty good LOL

I'll make it a sticky anyway...don't have much moderatin' to do normally, so I may as well do something!

haha, got any 0-60 or 1/4 mile times?
Brad97GS
11-27-2004, 08:29 PM
Nope, the Chiltons manual has nothing of that sort. I'd throw in a guess at low 17s/high 16s (for the 1/4 mile, heh).

lol. kinda pathetic, i wonder why they didnt use the 3.1 MPFI in the grand ams
Brad97GS
11-28-2004, 02:15 PM
The 3.1 wasn't around in those days. It was the 2.8 back then, which was less powerful than the 3.0, especially in '85 when the GA was introduced. And compared to the 2.5L in '85, that 125 hp was pretty good! 2.5L only had 92 hp or so...then in '89 was bumped up to 110 hp.
Prospeeder
11-28-2004, 07:58 PM
well, the 88-96 grand prixs had the 3.1 in them, so the grand ams could have had it
Brad97GS
11-28-2004, 08:51 PM
Pretty sure the GP didn't get the 3.1 till mid-year in '89. Before that it was the 2.8.
And anyway, by that point the 3.0 was out of the GA. '88 was the last year it was available. '89 came with a number of good engine choices: the 2.0L turbo, and both HO and LO Quad 4s, as well as that 110 hp 2.5L.

11-28-2004, 10:14 PM
Oh, ic, the 2.5L had 110 hp? i thought they only had 92 hp
Brad97GS

Changed in '89.

Really?? oh, thats strange, well, i think the 2.5s' could be alot better, thats pretty big for a I4 and its got no power, U floor it in a car w/ the 2.5, it doesnt go fast, it just kinda goes, lol Oh and didnt the 2.8's have 135 hp? then the 3.1 Had 145hp, My 3.1 had 205 heheheheh Turbo comes in handy lol
Brad97GS
11-30-2004, 06:38 AM
Some 2.8 MPFI engines had around 135 hp or so, I think. I am not too familiar with them. But it seems like some had less, around 120. There was an earlier 2.8 that had a carb, and probably less power.
The 3.1 MPFI had 140 hp I believe.
The 2.5L engine was a lot better in a couple of Indy pace cars. They put a turbo on it and bumped it up to 250 hp! But in factory form, 110 hp was the best the 2.5 ever achieved.

The 3.1mpi had like 140-145hp depends on the car and year. It also had 180tq. The 2.8 carb had 110- 125hp and 150tq. The 2.8mpi had 130-135hp and 160-165tq. The tech4 had it's most power when it was in the Jeep Cherokee 130hp and 150tq

Do you know what years it was in the Jeep?
RocketFast321
11-30-2004, 03:32 PM
From jeep forum
2.5L I4 carburated - 105 hp @ 5000 rpm, 132 ft lb torque @ 2800 rpm - used in 84-85 models
2.5L I4 TBI (fuel injected) - 117 hp @ 5000 rpm, 135 ftlb @ 3500 rpm - used in 86 and updated in 87-90 to 121hp
2.5L I4 MPI (multi-port injection) - 130 hp @ 5250 rpm, 139 ft lb @ 3250 rpm - used in 00-91
GM 2.8L V6 - 115 hp @ 4800 rpm, 145 ft lb @ 2400 rpm - used in 84-86
but on consumerguide.com they say the last year for the 2.5 was 2000 it was 125hp and 150tq
http://auto.consumerguide.com/auto/used/reviews/full/index.cfm/id/2359
I have yet to see a 2.5 jeep all i seen was the I6

Ic, why is a GM motor in a Chrysler Vehicle? And the 3.1 is actually a nice motor, just if u dont have a turbo its slow as hell, 140 horses and 3400 pound grand prix to move, not fast, and a 3 speed slush box
RocketFast321
11-30-2004, 07:27 PM
jeep was sort of the bastard child. I believe the story goes like this. Jeep did not have any good engine to put in there vehicles. So gm help them out till the great I6 4.0 came out. I know I am wrong most likely but the story is on the internet somewhere

Ic, well thats funny, but i would think dodge would have a motor for it
Brad97GS
12-05-2004, 07:21 AM
Maybe Jeep bought the rights to the 2.5L before Chrysler bought Jeep? I'm just grasping at straws here, because I wondered the same thing (Chrysler even had a 2.5 of its own, IIRC).

hmmm, so then the 3.0 is a Branch of the 3800, so is it a 90 degreee or 60 degreee V6? Did any other GM vehicles come with it?
Brad97GS
12-05-2004, 04:07 PM
It's a 90 degree V6. I'm sure the Buick Somerset, Skylark, and Olds Calais had this engine. Not sure about any other cars though...possibly earlier versions of the Cutlass Ciera and Buick Century?

mybad errror brain must restart.
83 was the last last for the gm 2.5 the others were Chrysler. The gm 2.5 was 151ci and the Chrysler was 150ci. I saw 150ci and thought it was a gm. And both made almost the same amount of power.

ic, well, does ANYONE! on here havea1 3.0??? its so strange no one does, they say the 2.0 Turbo is rare, yet, there like 5 or 6 people with it, but 0 people with the 3.0, i think this should be called the rarest engine in the grand ams
Brad97GS
12-15-2004, 07:54 AM
I think the 2.0L Turbo was the rarest factory engine in the GA. Now, years later, the 3.0L seems to be the rarest engine of remaining Grand Ams...
The only guy I remember having that engine was Creedence85, but I think it's been years since he's been around...

Actually I've been on this site for at least four years, but if you notice, nobody has "been a member" since before January 2003 because we changed forum software. This site was originally a Yahoo club. There is a club history post somewhere on the site...maybe in the new members section? Anyway, read through it and you'll see how we got to where we are today.

oh ok, so is ur Riviera As fast as a 97+ GTP? Superchared 3800, i need a chip and ill be able to beat GTP's, im only like .5 seconds from them damnit
Brad97GS
12-16-2004, 08:27 AM
Not quite as fast as the '97+ GTP/Regal GS. Mine only has 225 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque, compared to their 240/280. The Riviera is also quite a bit heavier than those two cars - three or four hundred pounds, I think. I've never taken my car to the track or anything, and probably never will. I did take my old Regal to the track once and ran the 1/8 mile in 9.67 seconds @ 72.9 mph...when it had 179k miles on it. It was stock, and a little bit slower than most I think. But it wasn't the ideal day for racing (on and off rain), and I had never raced it at a track before, so I'd bet it was capable of more.

That's right! :P 1995 was such a strange year for GM cars. In my case, as far as I understand, I pretty much have the Series II engine with the Series I supercharger on it. That's why it has more power than previous Series I engines (they used to have 205 hp or something), but less than the Series II. Not to mention that I still don't know if I have an OBD-I or II computer...
I sometimes wish that I had gotten a '96 or newer car to avoid these strange hassles. Oh well, too late for that! I still love the Riv though. :)

Haha, awsome, got a cardomain or posted any pics of it on GAOC?
Brad97GS
12-19-2004, 02:02 AM
Well, I have posted pics of it here before, but I put them in the Off Topic section...so they are probably gone. I have some pics at http://photos.yahoo.com/brad89ga in the Riviera folder. And there are some other ones at http://students.uww.edu/moorebr17/pics/riv1.jpg (and then replace the "riv1" with "riv2", "riv3", etc until you get to 6). Also one at http://students.uww.edu/moorebr17/pics/rivoutline.jpg and one at http://students.uww.edu/moorebr17/pics/rivtree.jpg
And finally, someone hit my car over the summer, and I did a quick fix on the scratches (though a little dent remains). Before and after shots at http://students.uww.edu/moorebr17/pics/scrape.jpg and http://students.uww.edu/moorebr17/pics/scrapefixed.jpg

And since I just did all that, I think I'll post a thread in the Non-GA Owner Members' Rides section now... :) This is the 3.0L engine section, after all. :)

I had a 85 G.a with the 3.0 in it I was the second owner... it was peppy for the time. Was fully loaded and even came with the acoustics 6 speaker tape deck and optional sun roof . I put on almost 385,000 km on the odometer when a bad lifter caused the engine to back fire blowing off the muffler. It was 2 much for a valve job and she went to the junk yard.
Def a good car and a strong motor for the times
