I have a 90 ga quad 4 with the 160hp and auto. First off, is it a 3 speed? At 62mph it is at 2500 rpm. second, It runs 16.6 in the 1/4 at 87mph. What are your quad 4's running?I only have the k&n air filter.

Yes, it is a 3 speed auto. Not the greatest tranny performance-wise...but at least they're pretty reliable!
My '89 GA (same setup, though it was only 150 hp because of some year differences) ran a 16.5 @ 83.5 mph with a K&N drop-in filter. Quads mated to five speeds typically touch the high 15s... :)

95 GT coupe LD2 - 15.9 @ 87 MPH
94 GT sedan LG0 (HO) - 15.6 @ 89 MPH
Both are manual.
Both were using a conical filter on stock intake tubing, other than that... stock.
I'm positive the 95 is faster now, unfortunately I've been having bad luck at the track... mostly cause it's too crowded and can't launch without practice anymore. Getting 1-2 runs only really sucks :(

How did you get your auto GA to 16.6 1/4mile time? I have a '91 GA LO/automatic, newly rebuilt and the best I can run are 17.6!!
I realize that racing is more than putting the pedal to the medal, but theres a whole second difference!! Please let me know if there's a trick to this.

what was the elivation of the track you were at, that always plays a roll, temp too, and so on. But its not uncommon, ive seen 2.4 autos in the mid 16s and the ld2 and ld9 have basicly the same power

I shifted manually, which seemed to help the time a little. The tranny wanted to shift a little too soon if left in D. Also, at the launch I brake torqued it a little (maybe 2000 rpm) since the Quad has such little power from 1000-2000 rpm (not so great at 2000 either, but it's better).
Do you have the complete set of numbers from your timeslip, like 60' times, 1/8 mi. times & speeds, etc?

This slip I ran a 17.8, but I have ran a 17.6, but here...
RT: .8734
60 FT: 2.6103
330 FT: 7.6032
1/8 ET: 11.5421
1/8 MPH: 61.85
1000 ET: 14.984
1000 MPH: N/A
1/4 ET: 17.8799
1/4 MPH: 78.8
Although this isn't a good time reguardless, In this run I beat a '00+ Neon SE. He even redlighted on me and he ran a 18.533!!
Please let me know what is going on. My elevation is ppretty low..I ran this near San Antonio TX. What are your shift pionts for the automatic? Lately I have been running it till the "warning" lines on the tach, but I haven't ran a 1/4 mile that way yet. Do you think I should run my car that high in rev?

You didn't even run it to the redline? No wonder your time is so slow! The Quad needs to rev high to get any power. :) As long as you don't go past the redline, you will be fine. I shifted to the next gear at 6200 rpm, and IIRC never had to switch to 3rd gear, but it was a few years ago.

Well your 60 foots can come down alot i would say. is your car a 5 speed?
And the light has nothing to do with your times, you could read light and run a slow time or wait for an hour sitting still while the light is green then blast off a 15 second run or whatever, the tree has nothing to do with the time, it just tells you when to go, your time starts when your car moves, not when the light turns green.

By the way my car is a 3 speed auto. .. During these runs I run the engine up to about 5500 to 6000 rpm. The yellow runs untill 6750rpm. Should I run it till that point? What about reliability issues from the engine and tranny? (I realize that to keep the car reliable I shouldn't do any of this racing, but anyway.) I also might try that 3.3K resistor in the coolant temp sensor the next time I run. What are your opinions if I disconnect the air intake tube (no filter for the run only)?

Let it wind out to revlimit. (should be 6500 rpm) Letting it shift early means dropping way out of the peak powerband... and this is especially hard to avoid with the 3 speed auto. Even with 5 close ratio gears and 7200 rpm revlimit (94 HO) my shift points make or break my race times. On both LD2 and HO I've found that running just short of revlimit (shift light warns before it hits on mine) results in my best times.
Reliability? Well you answered your own question, but let the engine reach it's full powerband... "let it live." Both my cars frequently visit the revlimit and both have no complaints.
I wouldn't mess with the coolant temp sensor... let the ECM retard the timing if it thinks the engine is too warm and will knock. Knocking certainly won't improve your times.
Yes you could take the intake tubing off for a run or 2. I've experimented, tho IMO a "short" or "warm air" intake + cone filter work equally well and seem to actually be smoother mid-RPM.

I usually launch the car by power braking and reving the engine to about 2000rpm or higher. If I do go higher, I usually burn out and lose tractin. I read that for the automatic, the area where most torque is pplied is around 3600rpm, but that is alot of stress on the tranny. Any more tips would be appreciated.

man ya'lls ga's r kinda slow. i ran a 10.01 in 1/8 with no mods what so ever. the car had 187000 miles on it and never gave throughout the powerband. pulled strong the whole track.i dunno whats up with ya'lls.
then again my ga is 5 speed.

what motor do you have to run a 10.01 in the 1/8 mile??
