I live in California so if I put new heads and a new camshaft in my 96 GAGT will I be able to pass smog. The only reason I ask is the part discriptions said that they may be illegal on some polution controled cars and I dont know everyone knows California has the stricktest emission laws in the country.

I am interested to find out if it does. Maricopa County here in Az now has probably the strictest testing set up now for emissions. I am wanting to rebuild a motor. I am adding a roller cam/lifters/rockers, better heads, and intake. I am also thinking of yanking that damn OBDI computer from the car also and going after market so that I can change up when I need to make the car pass. Keep us posted. If you want to pass though, do go too wild on the cam our you will be fast as hell in a car that you can't drive....hehehe

Hey yonkman, either post the cam specs or PM them to me and i will let you know if it will pass, assuming the entire emissions control system is functioning properly.

I live in Cali too and I've heard it is really hard to mod 96 and up Grand Am's because of the emissions laws so most likely you won't pass smog. Sorry man.

Neither of those mods should be significant enough to cause your car to fail.
Question - who makes the camshaft you want to install, and does that part have a CARB E.O. number?
The California Air Resources Board tests aftermarket parts, and those shown to have no negative effect on emissions output are given E.O., or Executive Order, numbers.
If the cam is emissions legal in Cali, then it should come with one of these numbers. Go to the site and check, or email the company and ask them if it's been emissions-certified for on-road use in California.

First off the 3100 does't put out a huge amount of emissions to begin with and as long as you still have a good cat on you shouldn't really have anything to worry about.
