The crossover SUV is based on the same platform as the Chevrolet Equinox that is known for it's ample interior space and stanard adaptable features like moveable rear cargo shelf and flat folding front and rear passenger seats.

Rolling on standard 16" steel wheels with 16" or 17" alloys optional. Front end has a distinctive Pontaic split grill treatment with agressive headlamps and the rear shows a darkened tail light unlike the euro styled tail lights on it's Chevrolet cousin.

Powered by the same 185hp 3400 V6 though a 5 speed Aisin automatic transmission as in the Equinox it's avalible in either FWD or AWD versions. Don't expect blistering quartermile time here. Weighing in at 3,776lbs with a 112.5" wheelbase you'll average about 18.5@75mph with a 0-60 of about 11.4 seconds.

Based on Equinox prices expect a well equipped Torrent to go for about $30,000. The Pontiac Torrent is scheduled to be released as a 206 and will go on sale in fall of 2005. It's first public debute will be at the Los Angeles Auto Show in January 2005.

- Personally, I like it. I think it's styling is alot nicer than the Chevrolet. We test drove the Equinox and really enjoyed it. The only grip we had besides it's pricing was the flaired rocker extensions that rub against your leg while entering and exiting the vehicle.

Looks pretty nice. Looks kind of smooshed though.

looks like a trailblazer. Pontiac did have a good thing going with the trans sport with the 3800

I think I like the looks of the Torrent, but for the price I'd purchase either a real SUV of a Dodge Magnium.

You'll probally laugh at this idea but I ad a friend selling a Lumina APV with 200,000+ miles on it for like $100. Rust free (obviously) and in really deent shape. It had a 3800 in it and ran good, but no one could seem to fix the tranny leak. I wanted to get it, gut it all out and spray a 125hp shot of nitrous to it and go smoke ricers. Another friend father purchased it, fixed the leaking tranny pan by tightening the bolts and drove it for nearly another 80,000 miles.

I would buy it over the Equinox, because I think it looks better, but if I'm spending that much, I don't want a 3.4L engine...to small for a "car" like that.

Yeah I like it better too but I also agree its dissapointing that it comes with only the 3.4L right now. Expecially when the saturn VUE (V6 and Redline)has the 3.5L Honda Vtec engine in it which makes 250 Hp....thats 65hp more.

I'm digging this thing :) It may very well be my next vehicle after the GA is paid off. I need something a little bigger for the business, so this thing may be it.

It handles a lot like the Saturn VUE, which has been praised up and down by owners.

Hopefully it will have the 250 hp engine like the Vue

What We Know: The Pontiac Torrent will be one of a number of GM or GM-affiliated mid-size SUVs produced on the Theta platform in the next few years. It will appear as a 2006 model and be constructed in Ingersoll, Ontario, alongside the Chevrolet Equinox and a yet-unnamed Suzuki equivalent. In addition to the two latter vehicles, the Torrent will also share its platform with the Saturn Vue. The Torrent will share the Chinese-built, Shanghai-GM 185-horsepower, 3.4-liter V-6 engine of the Equinox.

The Equinox looks much, MUCH better in my opinion.

I don't think I would ever buy a mini-SUV with a 3.4 in it.

All I think of when I see 3.4 is a Grand Am.
