95 GA with 3100 very poor MPG

I know this probably has been discussed before but here goes, I bought a 95 Grand Am Se 3100 engine last month, 79,000 miles, this thing gets about 15-17 mpg in town and hwy. Normal driving, I take it pretty easy. runs like a top, no engine noise or other problems. Any suggestions to increase the mpg?

air filter
pull the plugs to see if they are ok
make sure your tires are full

I will give that a try, I havent tried anything yet, it has to improve, the tires are new and inflated right.

I have a 95 with 140K on it and rod knock like no other and i get about that in the city but i get like 27-30mpg on the highway
