OK just bough the car. 96 has 2.4 Twin cam. Does not smoke on start up or when driving regularly. Hammer the pedal and it smokes BADLY. What are these engines know for? The 4.6 in my Ford is known for valve seals. Car has 81K. Not realyy concerned and I only paid 2K for the car so I am not going to spend lots of $$$ on it. Just curious. Was going to change plugs, fuel filter and air filter for kicks and giggles. When I looked at the car at the dealer it does not look like oil had been changed in quite some time. Dealer changed the oil. Search was not really any help. thanks in advance.

What color is the smoke? If it's black, it just means that the car is running rich - too much fuel, not enough air. If it's blue, it's oil. And if it's white, it's antifreeze. Generally speaking, anyway...

If it's blue oil smoke it sounds like it may be bad rings , ( not good ) , if it's black smoke it's a fuel system problem .

Combination blue and black. See with rings I thought it would smoke all the time. Runs just fine. Power and fuel milage seem good. No water from exhaust or milky oil so I do not think it is a head gasket. Its was a clean, inexpensive car so as long as it drives I am cool. Just will take it easy. I'll try some Restore with the next oil change. Thanks guys!:)

If the car is pinging under load it can unseat the rings as the piston rocks in the bore , especially if the rings are tired to start with . There may be carbon build up in the engine also , try some fuel system cleaner and see if that helps .

Thanks! I was going to do that as well. So far I have put 150mi on the car and it has barely used a 1/4 tank. There is an advantage to a 4 banger sometimes!;)
