droping the pan removes about 7qts of fluid. droping the pan is what most are going to say to do. A tranny flush cleans out all the fluid. not recommended unless you had a rebuild did.
so why just drop the pan ?? why not get it all out and get all new tranny fluid?

Actually a power flush get's about 3/4 of the fluid changed, a pan drop about 1/2. With a power flush you can't change the filter though, which causes a lot of debris to relocate within the tranny and often cause problems. A pan drop also includes a filter change and new pan gaskets.
Like william said, unless you're having major work done a flush isn't necessary, a pan drop would be better.

There isn't any way to drain it ALL the fluid (by gravity) since a quart or two is inside the non-draining torque converter.
The best change for an older tranny, IMHO, is two fluid/filter changes, about 2 months apart.
Not too expensive if DIY, and this results in replacement of 3/4 of the fluid without risking blow-out of older/harder seals that IMO can occur with a power flush.
Good luck.
