View Full Version : When will it stop...

OK, so here's a quick background.
My GN is a money pit. I fix something, something else breaks.
It was fine, tranny slips a little, rear main selas needs to be replaced, and ERG is bad. But runs fine. Well until a month ago it started backfiring/misfiring. Replaced coil pack, plugs, wires, and fixed a rusted up pipe. Yeah got my power back. But now abuse on the transmission has taken it's toll (why did GM use a TH2004R and not the TH700R4?). Then I get a massive exhaust leak from my manifold. THinking it was a manifold gasket I drop it off to my buddy RJ (bluez) to replace it. COme to find out it's just a bolt that fell out. So he repalces it after searching for a new one. Great, fixed again. Yesterday I punch it into traffic. KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK! Engine Denotates BAD! I drive it easy until I get home hoping I just have bad gas. Open the hood and see the vaccume line from my wastegate accuator blown off. So it wasn't adding fuel at WOT under boost. :( Once I put it back on it's running fine. I drive for about a hour and on my way home these littl punks in ricers (old celica and civic with ugly fart tips) thought they would play with the big dog. Since they wouldn't let me over I punched it. Turbo spools and I'm hauling past the CIvic and then pull up along the celica and BAM! I back off and duck behind and over and coast up the ramp. Sounds like I through a rod at first. Then as my RPMs come down sounds like a massive exhaust leak, maybe a blown head gasket. I limp it home and under further inspection find that I blew the spark plug clean out of the cylinder head. Not just that, but the metal threads from the plug are still in the head, I blew the porcilin out of the threaded body. I don't have any spare plugs for this car (go figure I have one for a Subaru, Yamaha, and the GA.) So I'll have to work on it when I get home tuesday night. :(
Have you ever seen anything like this? lol

Funeral services will be held for the GN next week, and a memorial service will be planned for Saturday, August 23rd, 2003 at 8pm, hope all can attend :evil2:
John, you edit this, I and break your fingers and :kick:

Sounds like the Jeep I had before the GA. Just one problem right after another .. sure, most of it was a cheap fix, but one gets tired of it after awhile.
Is this your DD? If I remember right, you have another couple of cars? I would put the GN away, if I could, until I had the money to rebuild/repair whatever's wrong with it. Then just use it as a show car and weekend stomper.
I'm really surprised that GM put in a TH200??? That's crazy. I expected a 350 at least. Maybe a tranny swap is in order - or did you want to keep the car with numbers matching?
I hope it works out for you. I love those cars. They're pretty rare down here, but I always love looking at them driving by. Oddly enough, most owners down here actually take care of them.

How are you going to get the metal threads out of the head?

Yes it's my daily driver. But once spring rolls around I ride my motorcycle alot more. Having the new bike and just purchaisng a house I don't have the money for another decent car, let alone restoring this one. Trust me I would love to. It's not the fastest GN built but it's not the most common either. The guy I bought it from only put 1000 miles on it. He didn't drive it much because he also owned a '86 GN and a '87 TurboT WE4. Along with his daily drivien Suburban. The fella he purchased it from had it sitting outside for years and it shows.
Oh well, see what I can do with it. Who knows maybe it'll find a good home if I get rid of it.

I'll just have to be careful getting them out. Then tuesday buy another plug and see if I can get the old junk out. I'm also going to attach a vaccume adapter to the plug opening and just incase there is any porcline chips (if it hasn't already done damage) If not I'll have to tear down the top half of the motor.

... wow, I have seen that before John but usually it happens when I am removing a plug that I 'kink' the socket or something and snap the ceramic ... maybe this is what happened when you were installing them last time and the crack slowly got worse until BOOM  ... stick with it bud, you'll get 'ahead of it soon' :D

John, that happened to my BMW as well, not sure why though....I unfortunatly did not have the hex head left on mine, it snapped right off....but I noticed it was missing, didn't really have any loud bangs or nothing....I had to thread extract mine out.....Hope it works out for you!

lol, nope just at WOT at about 5000rpms in second gear. :)
Here is a photo of both parts of the plug.
So much for quality AC Delco parts hu?

I wondered how ya got all that cylinder pressure .... HA HA :D But seriously that must have been a defective plug ? At least the threads are O K in the head .... not that big a blow , except to the ego .

Yeah I was wondering how it would have been enough to blow out the plug. I only have 8:1 static compression and boosting maybe 10psi, 12 at the most.
I have a adjustable wastegate rod but waiting to install it until I buy a AFPR. Then I'm bound to blow more than just a faulty spark plug. lol

Yeah , with any more boost you'll have to o ring the block to keep the head gaskets in , never mind the odd plug ... LOL :D

lol, well 'if' I had the proper setup could go to about 20psi without a intercooler safely. But I'm not planning on going that high, most maybe 16psi. I'm not looking to break any records, or internal parts for that matter. But I'm looking more into tuning the current setup, a new custom up-pipe, custom 3" down pipe and restoring the body this year.

:D Poor 2004R ! An intercooler should be good for a 10 % increase by its self , will the newer GN cooler work on your setup ?

Not on my setup. My turbo is bolted directly to my intake manifold. It would take a bit of pipe work, and turning the plentium around. I was thinking of using a 40-50 shot of N2O to cool the intake charge, but if I do that I won't run more than 14psi.
But that is nothing in the near future, so I don't have to worry about it.
And my slipping TH2004R hasn't seen anything yet. I have a set of Hoosier slicks waiting in the garage. But I think I'll wait until I rebuilt it before I scatter gears all over the tarmac.

Dude I have never seen that happen to a plug, I have broken a couple, but not pulled right out of the socket like that. Pretty Impressive.
Well, just think, if you break that motor, you can always put the turbo's on your GA....:)

lol, I didn't pull it out. It blew out while I was driving. And funny thing is, it won't fit back into it either. lol
Very odd.

Yeah , a small shot of nitrous would certainly cool the intake charge . Lots of racers use it for just that purpose , instead of just a power adder . Those slicks will give the driveline a jolt for sure ! Especially the stock size ringgear . Yeee Haa :D
