Hey all. I posted in another thread that I found that I had some coolent in my oil and that I was going to do a 3400 swap. Well, do to the lack of funds because more parts are broke than I thought, I can not afford to do the swap. But I will post some pics of the work that am doing for those of you that have not experienced the fun of just tearing into your engine to fix the crap that someone else broke. So you know I bought this car at 82K 2 years ago. I dumped about 700 in tires and other parts to bring the car up to par so that it can be driven. I will be adding pics to this thread as I do the work over the next few days.

Here is Day 1.

Here is the discovery of water in my oil.

Before any real work is done. The one thing you don't see in this pic that I already did was relieve the pressure in the fuel line and removed the duct that connects the UIM to the air box.

Nothing good in this pic but a shoe box. This box is very important in that I will be using to track where my parts go and where where they came from.

Day2 is done. I didn't get to start on it until about 7:30ish PM Az time since I had to work all day. It took me about 2.5 hours to get this far. I have the UIM, Alt, coil pack, and lots of sensors had to be removed. You can see how nice and pretty everything is here. Everything is clean....NOT!!! I started to go a little further, then decided to stop where I was because I didn't want to remove the motor mount tonight in the dark.

In this pic, you can see where I was leaking some oil. This is where I found a little puddle of coolent last night so I suspect this is where the leak is. And for those ask....it wasn't the thermostat housing leaking. I checked it and it was bone dry......

The EGR port nice and dirty. This needs a little cleaning I think.

In the trottle body port. This is acutally behing the throttle body. My camera had a little hard time focusing on the spot that I wanted. But if you see the brown spot, that is the other side of the EGR port. I cleaned it out a little....I suppose the shop I take it to get it tanked will clean it really good.

This the bottom or the port side of the UIM.

This is the front of the throttle body. I think I will be sending it in to get cleaned also.....:)

The back side of the Throttle body. Lot of gooy stuff here. I think this is mostly from the EGR. Yeah a good scrubbing is in order.

Now I know this maybe a little anal, but knowing where the bolts I take out came from is a good thing. So here is "The Box"......:D

Day 3

You have to remove the motor mount to get the intake out? How ingenous is that?

Day 3

Here is the underside of the LIM. You can see how there is water mixed in with the oil...not pretty....

Day 3

A little better pic of LIM. Pretty slick and oily...too bad there is water in is also.

Day 3

Hey the vavle covers. Like how they are lined with oil and water. Just add vineger and we can have a salad.....yum....

Day 3

In the valley. I already removed most of the gasket and all of the push rods. They need to be removed so the new gasket can be put in.

Day 3

Here is a close up of where it was leaking at. Strange thing is there is a build up of oil there and what looks like grime. Looks like the car has also leaked a little oil because the block and head there have a nice coating.

Day 3

I took all this to the self serve car washer with 3 cans of engine degreaser and pressure spayed them. It took $10.00 in quarters and about 30 minutes to clean the stuff. Most of the junk just came off no problem.

Since I am not able to afford the 3400 intakes and TB, I thought that maybe I would gasket match the intakes and put on a mild polish. Here is a before. You can see my pencil marking around the intake port on the UIM. Notice how the port isn't very round and pretty rough on the inside.

Day 3

Here is one of the ports finished. I used a 120 grit drum sander on a dremel tool to enlarge the port and to polish up the inside. I am only poslishing the inside of the ports and not the entire plenum. I didn't run the tool too fast because I didn't want to take off to much metal. I need to see there is a way I can do the heads while they are on the engine so that the entire set is ported and polished.

Well all I got it all back together, but there are a couple little quirks to work out like making sure there is enough coolent in the engine. I started it up and it sputtered, rattled, and spit and spewed, and after about 15 seconds of all that, the computer wised up and adjusted all the sensors and actuators like the iac and the car started to calm down. The power steering is rough though, but once all the air is out it will quiet down more than it already has. The only problem that I have seen so far seems to be really big temp swings. from about 140 to 200. I don't think I have enough coolent in the car. I think I have an air bubble.

But porting and polishing had a much better effect than I dreamed of. I got it on the road andof course I could not resist, I stood on it for a couple secs and noticed right off there is good amount difference in the performance.

I will post the rest of the pics as soon as I get the software reinstalled for my printer (it has my cf card reader on it). Maybe tomorrow. Now if the thing will quit smoking from having ps fluid dumped down the back I will be in biz.....lol

wow.....looks like someone has been busy. So this only took 3-days?

ohh my friggen god, de ja freakin veu, Ha i did this to my little brothers car, only When i put it back together i pinched an injector oring and the fuel rail inlet oring, so when doing the initial engine flush, the car sat there spraying fuel all over untill i could run over and shut it off DOH. then i got to do the upper intake and fuel rail again lots of fun. The power steering pump did the same thing, just winned untill the next day when the air had dissipate over night. the temp fluctuated on my lil bro once and only once after the operation and he just needed a lil more fluid. Question how did you get the belt back on, that tensioner thing is messed up, we used a 4 foot steel bar with a notch in it. And the motor mount thing pissed me off after i tried for quite some time in a dimly lit area to remove the nuts on the inside of the engine bay (you know the ones that are welded in) the next day i realized to go through the wheel well, much easier. Great pics of the whole operation, and your leak was in the exact spot of the one i did.

Putting the belt on was easier than taking it off. I had the mount all together except for that one part that actually mounts to the body/frame and the engine, jacked the engine up a little, used a 1/2" breaker bar and a wrench to extend it and put it on. To take it off, I did it with everything intact, so room was limited...lol. Actually the op took 4 days, It is just hard to work on it when you work 12 hours a day at the regular job. But I will say that port and polish job, sweetened up it up a little. Not a huge gain in power, but there is a little more low to mid range torque and the power is a lot smoother. I have decided if I have to do this again, the thing comes out, gets punched and tricked out. Might take about 3 weeks with all the parts I want to order....hahahahaha....:)

Return to the pics.

Here is a lifter from the area of the leak. Notice how clean and shiny this one is not. It took a lot of work to get this out undamaged. It's counter part the exhaust one was just like this.

Hey the lower intake is installed. It starts looking like the engine it was before I tore it up.

Here is the fuel rail. Not a very clean item either. I cleaned this up but just wiping everything off and replacing all the o-rings. The kit for that is only about 9 bucks at autozone. Not a bad chore either. But even the ones by the leak were a little uglier, since they were dumping just a little less fuel. It changed the ratio in that cylinder enough to change the spark gap from .060" to .090". That cylinder was getting a little hotter side and dry firing more.

there I go again with the submit button...here is the pic.

here is the number 3 injector. Notice how there is a buldup on the end of it. I imagine that since very little gas was coming out of it, it wasn't washing this just away.

Ok...I didn't take any more pics from here out because all that was left was putting on the fuel rail, UIM and connecting the hoses lines and putting fluids back in. Now I do have to say that I did change the oil before trying to start it, and thought to take a pic of it because it looked just like chocolate milk. But wife thought it looked like diarea and didn't think I should post a pic of that. Pretty sick I thought......:D

Fill me in i need to add more coolant to my car could you let me know the mixture i need ?

Marks95GAGT
04-06-2003, 12:46 PM
I use a 50/50 mix of coolent and water. Don't use water from the hose either. There are way too many minerals in it can can cause rust and your radiator to be plugged. I just buy distilled water at the store for that.

very nice, I love porting heads but my dremel is fuct. :(

How many miles on those injectors? they looked pretty bad, there is a ultrasonic Bosh machiner that leaves them all shiny and with pretty low internal resistances... :D

There are about 106K on them. I am thinking of seeing if there are some better ones out there for the new engine I am hoping to build at the end of the year. I am going aftermarket everything on it, including the computer. The only original equipment stuff is the antilock brakes. I started my wish list last week of all the little toys to buy for it. It will take me a little time, but man, it will be worth it.

I'm gonna have to do this for my car coming up this monday. is there anything that you recomend keeping in mind or being careful of or special instructions while doing this project. also how much more work is it to get to the head gasket? cuz i'm at 106,000 miles on my 3100 and i'm running 7psi turbo, think since i'm down there i should just replace that one too?

I need to do this too. I'm wondering what the torqueing pattern and torque specs are?

96GreenGaGT
10-30-2005, 11:39 PM
the torque specs should be in the haynes manual. i have one and can look it up for you if needed be. but it's in the car right now and it's kinda cold out and nearly 1am. lol

hey man post your wish list. it could be a wish list for other people too. particularly me. lol

So it's the same as in the Haynes Manual. I thought GM Released a updated spec that's all.
