could be the gunk cleaner, or the weather and salt from your roads.. I've never encountered it..

The new GTO had a bad case of rash when I took delivery. Boy was I pissed the first time I really looked at the motor after I got it. Anyway I think mine was caused by the gas coming out of the battery while it was idle (the car sat on the dealers lot for over six months before I took delivery). The dealer then had to replace many parts and repaint alot of the engine compartment. The reason I think battery was because all the rash I had was circling the battery in about a 2 foot circle. All better now.

mine was pitted when I had a 2.4 with high mileage, we have pretty rough winters here too in PA.

Remember all these parts for our cars, are just castings, with a decent finish.... Theres pitting all over the place...
Even the cylinder head, all in the ports... and the matting surface, now its has a finish on it, so it doesnt look like it... but pitting occurs in MOSt things that are cast.....
Some worse than others....
