i have looked at a few grand ams and my buddy has a 98 with the 2.4. i was just wondering what you guys think of the 2.4 and would i be better off auto or manual. I have a cavalier right now and they come with the 2.4 which in our cars is THE performance motor. What do you think about it in the grand am vs. the v6. What can i get more aftermarket stuff for?

with the 2.4 and actually the 2.2(ecotech) as well, you can find a load of stuff to get,now the cavy and the GA have different sized engine bays and some things might be arranged different so there can be clearence issues with some things, for instance, the 2.4 header,it fits cavy fine, theres problems with clearence on the GA. IMO I like the 2.4 better then the v6 just because there such a huge market for 4cyl engines right now and there always have potenial for some major motor upgrades. If I coulf have a manual Id take it but I have an auto so I have to stick with it.

On 96-98 my opinion is:

2.4 manual > 3.1 auto > 2.4 auto

if i were you i would get a newer z24 or sunfire gt with a manual and a 2.4. but if you really want a GA then go with the 2.4 manual.

V6 is good for bolt on work
the LD9 is good for deep down performance, for the diehards i guess

I am looking at a 99 z24 right now but i know everything for a cav 2.4. I was just wondering as far as external bolt-on clearance issues. Also has anyone done the gm supercharger on their grand am. my buddy wants to do it and i dont think it will work due to the pcm reflash needed. thanks for the responses.

it's cheaper to modify an ld9.... even cheaper to modify an LGO.....
