Hi,

If one were to switch the rotors on a grand am (left wheel to right wheel) what would be the consequences of doing this?

thanks.

why would you want to

They are identical, and there would be no adverse effect.

EXCEPT:
1. If one rotor had been replaced previously, you *might* notice a difference under hard braking.
(A thinner rotor will heat more rapidly, and fade more rapidly. So if the original (thinner) rotor is now on the right, that side will fade sooner under extreme conditions (racing, or going down a loooong twisty hill at highway speeds).
So if you swap it to the other side, then the left will fade sooner under extreme conditions.
This scenario is very unlikely.)

and,

2. If you suspect that one rotor is warped, a shade-tree mechanic's test is to swap rotors and see if the 'warpage' goes to the other wheel.
Since you have to remove both calipers to do this, it's prolly just as easy to take both rotors to the Auto Parts store and have them turned.
Then you know everything's right.

Good luck.

It will spin backwards?

It will spin backwards compared to what direction it was spinning.

Good point.

I recall old Porches and others, at the 'beginning' of the age of cross-drilling, having directional rotors.
The webs/fins separating the faces were actually cast in an arc, or straight but tangential (instead of radial) to the hub.
Then, the cross-drilling was in some kind of mini-arc pattern.
Reversing sides would prolly have an adverse effect on cooling.

I don't know if this applies to aftermarket cross-drilled rotors for GA's.

thanks for the response....my left rotor still making squeaky/groaning noise...i though i fixed the problem last week...so i am going to switch them around to see if the noise goes to the other wheel or clears the problem entirely.
