Long story-but in short I need to replace my tensiner, anyone done this before? Can I do this without support of the engine, appears as though I can, based on diagrams and working on that area of the car.

i'd help but i have the 2.4L ... it cant be much different, ...
remove the belt, and then look for the bolts that are holding the tensioner assembly on... however (on the 2.4L) some things like the alternator (for example) maybe placed on top on the tensioner assembly and require removal as well... your best bet is to purchase a haynes manual on your car for $20CAD at a parts store... very useful diagrams and photos... it would also help with every other repair you need to do to your car

The 3400 has one bolt hold the tensioner on it's in the center of it. You don't need to support the engine. Just take the belt off, take the bolt out in the center of the tensioner, pop the new one on. It may even come with a new bolt.

I've done it before on my 3100.I bought a whole new belt tensioner assembly because my belt had tore in half and my tensioner was begining to brake also. I suggest you change it ASAP before your power steering is gone.I wouldn't say that its a hard job though. My mom had hers done on a 97 camry and the dealership charged her $170.

Yeah I was a dumbass, and replacing my alternator in the cold, i overtightened it and cracked the outside of the tensiner, and looks like theres a little nob on there that keeps it from losing tension in the belt and every few starts it will slip off and it squeels like no tommorow, i turn car off and retighten it, did this like twice on sunday, was not cool. So its 43$ for a new unit and I just wanted to make sure theres no crazy attachment other than the bolt, thanks guys

It's a little bit easier on the 3400 it more to the top of the engine. If you want something fun do do try changing the center idler pulley.

yeah I have done it on the 2.4 Not a lot of room for movement with a cheater bar. I just had to use a wrench to get full movement. Have someone close to slide the belt on. It will take all you got to move it with just a small wrench.

thats true, i had a predicament with my alternator where i was constantly removing and putting the belt back on... what a tight spot to put the tesioner.. i found the best way to get leverage was to use a wrench, but use the closed end on the tensioner, and use the closed end on another (larger) wrench and jam it into the open end of the wrench being used on the tensioner... gets good leverage and i was able to do it alone !
