They said it was not a pre-cat. They said it's not a resonater. So can you
GUESS THAT PART?

this is how it is on a 2.4L... and it looks like what I'm assuming it is which I will write in caps.. when explaining how the 2.4 twin cam is setup.

exhaust manifold, a bung on the collector of exhaust manifold is the 1st (primary o2 sensor) *the one that does all the important keep engine running goodies*, than comes the downpipe, than comes the CATALYTIC CONVERTER, followed by the rear o2 sensor *that is for emissions related bullshit*, than comes the resonator *as we know it as, also known as a thing that saps power*, than comes the muffler...

this entire shebang is three pieces.

and THAT looks like a CATALYTIC CONVERTER... not a pre cat or post cat or whatever... than I see the wire for the rear o2 sensor...

well you sound like you have the best answer but i need to know for sure. they guy at the muffler shop said the thing in the rear was the cat. it looks like the cat on my stang.

Thats a huge bitch! Keep it in the circus!! Actually, that is your resonator. Just like your muffler, all it does is reduce the sound. The second one is your cat and you can tell by its shape and style.

Tell ya what. Dont ever go to that muffler shop again, they should know what a catalytic converter looks like. I mean, thats their buisness!! You deserve better treatment than this.

NO, you got them switched around. Convertors are first, resonators are second. ALWAYS.

What Nice96GT said...Resonator...i stare at it at least twice a day and curse it

1st....take everything off from headers back....then put 2.5 inch piping in its place. no cat, no resonator. muffler.

it looks like the same in my 95 Grand Am GT...
The one closest to the engine is the cat, and then the second one is the resonator.....

oh yeah and the arrows are fine on the diagrams...
brake and fuel lines are on the drivers side...

where do you live? in mass if you alter the exhaust in any way, it's illegal, period.

That would be the cat..... now go find a new muffler shop.

Let me let you know something.. I do know that round canister is the cat.... reasoning...

I took it off, I played with it, I hammered it, I made a big mess, before it was the o2 sensor on the manifold, after it was an o2 sensor....

that other thing that "looks" like a cat is actually a resonator..

and this is from experience underneath around all over a grand am.

no, no, no -- everyone is wrong! It is clearly the transmission, and it looks to be a 6speed, a nice one at that.

NO, you got them switched around. Convertors are first, resonators are second. ALWAYS Are you sure? Maybe its just me but the round canister looks exactly like a resonator and the second one looks like a cat. Its weird because I know the cat is closer to the engine than the res but that thing just looks like a resonator to me. The second one definatly looks like a cat, simply because the extra sheild around it looks like the same design in my high-flow cat. But you may be right.

he is right... just like I am right...

the round canister is the catalytic converter... take it off and you can easily see that... the lil crap thing to the right of hte picture LOOKS like a cat but is NOT a cat it is a resonator thinking it is a cat....

Just listen, I know, I've taken the entire exhaust apart... piece by painful piece.

Yea, ive taken off my exhaust as well but I remember seeing the canister or the round piece looking like the res to me. Perhaps its been a while and now my memory is going though. hehe anywho, I know the true fact that the cat will be located before the res.
