Well since the other thread got locked....:roll2: Im starting this one list what you have done to your 2.4L performance wise. What you run or think your car might run at the track, post pictures if you like.
I ran a 16.118 in the 1/4 mile
cars a 5speed
My Mods:
HO intake manifold
56mm HO Throttle body
Iceman intake
Upper motor mount insert (in my room)
Suspension (guess this could be performance stuff too)
Old jbody STB
Sprint springs (sitting in my room)
In the future I am going to get the lower dog bone mount, UR pulley, 2.25 or 2.5 exhaust, and other shit.

What is your goal, speed wise? High 13's? What do you think power output will be? Why a T3/T04? Why not a GT28RS?
Youre more adventurus than I am. I'm just going to take my car to Hahn Racecraft and let them install.
My car has run a best of 15.13@91.36 (ran back to back to back 15.1...and a few 15.2's) with AEM Intake, Upper and lower motor mounts, and RK Sport cat-back.
My curent mods are:
Engine:
AEM intake all hacked up *custom :)*
RKSport upper motor mount
RKSport lower motor mount
RKSport cat-back exhaust
Cooling Fan Overide Mod
UR crank pulley
Accell Adjustable Fuel Pressure regulator (recently sold)
Fuel pressure gauge on fuel rail (recently sold)
Suspension/Wheels/Brakes:
Continental Conti-Extremes 205/55/16
Goldline 1.75" drop
Honda S2000 Spring Dampners
Front Strut Tower brace

sell it and buy a truck. :)

T3/T04 is a perfect size for the 2.4......perfect size for reliability and driveability anyway. :) And you can also find them fairly cheap. they are a very popular choice with the 2.4 j-body guys.
And spy should run better than high 13's ;)

i do like the 2.4 but do they have any problems that are chronic? i have heard about some spinning rod bearings.... so i wanted to know what you all thought. looking at a ninety six. maybe.

Be careful, watch the oil levels in an LD9; change oil ON TIME and with mobile 1 full syn if you can. Dont rev it past 6K, keep watch on the coolant level and make sure it doesnt overheat! (a functioning fan could help that) and a 180 thermo.
Other than the bearings, and the poor oiling system, the engine is solid. Ive never had anything go wrong but spinning that bearing.
The thing that sucks is the transmission, these izusu transmissions arent known for longevity or performance.

Thats why you get one with the getrag.

DontPassTheFence

Getrag is only on the newer cavs, and a few 01 GAs, unless you drop one in yourself. (I will as soon as my izusu gives out)

Where did you get the 180 thermo at? How much? And will it fit on a 99+? Was looking to get one and everyone tells me they don't make one that will fit. Any help would be appreciated.

How bad is the install on it?
DontPassTheFence
01-05-2006, 05:25 PM
I had an ld9 in mine then dropped a new one in, its definitely easier than swapping a GM v6, I can tell you that. The only problems I had were with getting it to bolt back on to the transmission, and getting the damn motor mounts in right. (I hate those things)
The new engine came almost fuly assembled (without the valve cover, plugs, alt, a/c condensor, ac lines, vac hoses, coolant hoses, dip stick. We dropped it in, and connected things as we went. Just make sure to label everything with tape and markers, that way you connect everything back to where it was. Also, we didnt move the brake booster, we left it in there and just dropped the engine in around it, but we dinged it a couple times,
No serious damage done, so it was fine.
If you are swapping the engine, replace the clutch and have the flywheel resurfaced if you can afford, its much easier to do with the engine out of the damn way.

I got a 180º thermostat at autozone, but havent put it in yet since the damn thing is HIDDEN. its way in the back near the waterpump (which is inside the timing chain cover) thankfully, its on the outside of the timing chain cover.
If you go underneathe the car as if to change the oil, go look over there, farther to the passenger side, beyond the oil pan, and it should be there, near the bottom of the engine... I havent actually seen it yet (oil everywhere!) so I cant be sure of its exact location
But thanks for reminding me, I should go do that sometime

Yea, I stilllll cant find the thermostat, what the hell? Why did GM hide the goddamn thing from us? Can anyone shed some light on this? I dont want to have to take off my goddamn timing chain cover just to change my thermostat...
carlover626
01-23-2006, 11:35 AM
I have read all over this board that the thermostat is a PITA on this car, besides purging the system afterward.
What are the "benefits" of having a lower temp thermo? Obviously the temp may not get so high, but what would that do?
mikekavan
01-23-2006, 11:43 AM
having a lower temperature keeps the engine cooler obviously. and part of this is the same principal as the cold air intake. the cooler the air (and the engine) the more air you can put into the cylinders. however i do not know that on this type of car that the difference will be noticably huge. i do know that on my 1980 chevy truck i have a problem keeping it from overheating and i have an oversize radiator and a colder thermo on it. the only time i have problems is when i use most or all the horsies which is rarely. but racing it does come in handy to have the lower temp.
DontPassTheFence
01-23-2006, 12:45 PM
yea, Id just like the lower thermo for the track (even when it was 50F at the track, at night, my car was at 200-210 in the pits) and during everyday traffic, the engine always hits 205-215 regularly. But then the fan comes on at roughly 225 and cools it back down to 200 even most times...

So in the winter what would be the offsetting differential? Would my car even reach operating temp?
Maybe if my damn guage showed the actual #'s I wouldn't have so many questions, but I don't know what halfway up on the guage actually reads?? I have the bottom 100, and the top (red) is 220-230 I beleive?
inferno
01-23-2006, 04:02 PM
the thermo on the 94 and later 2.3l and 2.4l engines is located above the radiator outlet pipe in the water pump cover.

my 2.4 is vortech supercharged with a johhnyracecar intercooler, running with 310cc injectors and the gm s/c reflash and 2 bar map sensor. Pacesetter header and exhaust on the way. But I may be switching to an eaton s/c soon.... shhhhh
DontPassTheFence
02-12-2006, 05:17 AM
FMIC on a supercharged application? Interesting, what levels of boost do you see with that, and how effective is that intercooler (any intake air temps, etc etc?)
It's actually considered an aftercooler.
loud2kse
02-12-2006, 06:22 PM
about 5 psi. No intake temps, but It's definitely worthwhile to have the cooler charge temps when it hits summertime around here.

oh hey, yea the AZ heat is nuts. all these nice cars in and around Phoenix, and Ive only seen one cavalier witha lame body kit and the license plate 'NOS cav'
Aftercooler? wha? I figured since he probably has it mounted on the front of his car, in front of the radiator - and it take atmosphere air in before the air hits the supercharger, Id think its still called an INtercooler. However, I am no genius when it comes to F/I -- Ive only seen a couple junkyard turbo setups IRL.

no, it's after the blower before the TB, so technically it's an aftercooler, but whatever.

haven't taken it to the track. It's for sure quicker than when I had the vortech. Once I get my pulley on and my alchy injection in, it should be at about 10 psi. Next time we have a track day I'll prolly run. Too bad it's starting to get hot here in phoenix.
