an idea i was kickin around in my head.. i dont know enough about how freon works to know if its worth the effort
its for my friends 91 turbo eagle talon, i was looking at air to liquid intercoolers, and they used water pumped through the intercooler to cool the air charge... does anyone on here know how quickly freon can pull heat out of air when it boils and turns into gas?
would it be worth it the run the cars A/C compressor lines into an air to liquid intercooler?
would it cool it enough to make up for the HP loss due to the AC compressor?
would freon eat through an aluminum intercooler?
are the pressures of the freon in gas form to high for an aluminum intercooler?

is this an idea that is worth more thought or am i just an idiot?

I can tell you that R134A Freon boils at about -30 degrees farienheit.

Plenty cold for ya? :)

How about just spraying nitrous across the front of the intercooler?

the ford lightnings have something like that, it uses the AC to cool the intercooler for like 15 seconds i think.

yeah, 15 seconds of fun and 15 minutes before you can do it again. sounds like the fun i had in high school

anyways, im with john on this one. i think it might be a little bit easier to install than one using your AC. i've actually seen kits that have N2O for cooling.

You can also use CO2... Its called Cryogeneration, or Cryogenic. There are a few companies out there that sell make these.. One of them is DEI. Its their CryO2 line... Check out the link http://www.designengineering.com/

why do you have to wait 15 minutes?
the problem with spraying it with nitrous is that the nitrous has to be refilled, the lightning.. what kind of system is that? does it actually use the freon with alternate piping? or does it just redirect cooled air over the intercooler?
does anyone know if freon does any bad things to aluminum? i dont know what the refrigerant lines are made out of

Werd. Or water spray. Or CO2 kit. Or alcohol injection. There are much easier, better, and environmental friendlier possibilities.

why isnt using the existing A/C system environment friendly?
its a closed system, the freon is already there and its not going to go anywhere
i want more cooling power than a nitrous spray

jayhawk, you seem to know a lot about cars, do you think this setup is worth pursuing?

if the radiator that the AC uses was increased in size.. it could pull more heat out of the intake charge, i think.. i dunno.. i need to research that more
i dont know anything about fluid dynamics though.. maybe i could track down a professor at my college and ask him about it

how fast will it pull heat out of the air before it goes through the intercooler

even if the project doesnt work out right.. the only problem we got is having a spare air to liquid intercooler laying around.. which isnt really a problem, we could either use it or just sell it
