How do you take off the rings that are around the AC vents?

I cant believe this hasnt been posted before...
I searched and searched, and I thought that this topic would have come up quite a few times.. or maybe its just my own ignorance! Anyways., how do you get those stupid rings that go around the A/C vents off? I really want to paint those red to match my interior theme...

i just pulled em :/ the vents come out with em

jesus those were really stuck in there... Thank you GM.. I fricken bruised a knuckle, lol. Either way, they are out, now I can clean the ducts, too, freakin' sweet!.

dude on the inside, there are 3 or 4 little clip things. they are like tabs. look inthere with a flashlight you will see em. just take a skinny flat head screw driver and pry them up while you pull outward. you may snap one, but its cool cause there are 2 or 3 more to hold it back it. i had mine out twice and some of mine are missing 2 tabs. sorry i forget the exact amout of clips
